have a 1999 f250,and yesterday i washed the motor, used simple green .waited about 1 hour and drove the truck about 10 miles to dry it out.few hours later i took truck to the store.on the way my battery light came on.stoped at advance auto andthey checked it out .said batteries are good, starting is good, but not charging.got a alternator went home installed it .noticed the battery light was not coming on with the key just turned to on.started and the volts coming out the big wire was 3.17 volts.went back to advance auto and they checked the alternater again, said it was bad.went home and pulled the 2 wire plug at the alternator.with the key off there is no volt reading.when i turn the key on the voltage is the same for both wires in the plug as the battery volts.checked all fuses .took the wire conector on the valve cover apart to see if it was wet,not wet.took the alternator back and got a new one.had it tested before leavig store.installed it .no light, only 4.1 volts.so i think i fried this one to.don't have any idea what to do from here and any information that i can get will be great.sorry abought the long post, but wanted to make sure that i had everything i did.thank you for any information you could give me

You should have a 3 wire connector on top of the alternator,
Yellow with a white tracer, orange with baby blue tracer, and light green with red tracer.
Yellow with white and orange with blue should show battery voltage at all times, light green with red should show batteyr voltage with the key in the on position only.
If the green with red does not have voltage then check fuse number 45 in the central junction box, its a 10 amp.
tailgate, thers only 2 wires on the top of my alternater.there both red/green.the plug is set for 3 wires but it only has 2 one on each end .no center wire.the truck has been that way since 2001 when i got it.don't know if it would make a difference if it was a early 99 or not.

My E99 only has 2 wires as well so that is not a problem.
Check fuse #6 under hood. It is designated Single or Dual Alternator "A" Field Regulator.
There is no fuse 45 on a 99-01. That is probably for a 2002-2003.
pasonpsd, thanks for the reply.i checked the fuse and its good.was also told that the plug for the alternator could be bad,but i get voltage from the ends with the key on.
well figured the problem out.there was a bad battery, and some fuseable links that shorted out.thanks for all the input and without this forum i would be lost.
