I have a 1980 F100 Stepside with a 351w HO we put into it, we currently have a Quadra Jet carb on it and when i put my foot down the engine bogs down and sputters almost like its shutting off and doesn't recover until i let my foot off the throttle, if i want to go full throttle i have to ease into it and even when i do theres still a lag when i go wot, im assuming it isnt getting enough gas any ideas why?
The cup on the accelerato pump is old and has gotten hard, and is not pumping anymore. The ethanol fuel you have to use now attacks the older style rubber parts in the old carbs. Get a kit and put in it, and it should be fixed. The newer kits have been upgraded with better rubber that withstands the ethanol in the fuel. Make sure you also get some epoxy and seal the main jet well plugs. They are famous for leaking on those carbs. Just do a web search, I am sure you can find out something about it.
On a Quadrajet, if it bogs real bad on the secondaries, check the choke pull-of diaphram, it is used as a dashpot to delay the air valve opening. The air valve itself has a tension spring on one end, I think the right end, that has a specified tension (number of turns) from contact on the lever of the air valve shaft. If it is too loose it will also cause a severe bog.
Back in the day, these carbs were nicknamed Quadrabogs due to these issues. Most of the problems can be solved if you know how to set them up properly.
On the driver's side is either a metal disc on early models or a stamped number on the vertical rib outside the secondary bores it will probably start 703 or 704, later ones start with a leading 1, 1705 this will be followed by 4 digits which actually identify the vehicle line and engine application. If you by some chance have a 1970-71 429CJ carb, it will have a metal tag with a Ford PN on it. Quadrajets have multiple kits unlike the Ford 2100 2150 carbs where one kit fit years and years.
