i have a 1997 f super duty 450 7.3L turbo. I have recently encountered a grinding noise coming from the area of the oil pan and transmission. I only get the grinding noise after the truck has warmed up and sitting at idle, when the grinding noise starts i am able to drive the vehicle in all directions. the noise goes away after the rpms reach 1000 and returns when rpms hit below 1000. any ideas? thanks for your help
There is an inspection cover on the bottom of the bell housing. Take it off and check the flex plate for cracks. Could be the torque converter maybe. There's a lot of sharp guys on here, I'm sure they'll chime in with some info.
i will check it in the morning it is 915 at night here please check back tommorrow but either way if the flex plate or the converter needs replacing what am i looking at (roughly) price to have it repaired.
Have you raised the hood and listened all around the belt and front of the engine while it's making this noise? The reason I'm asking is cause you would be amazed at how sounds can travel through trucks and make things sound like they're coming from some where that they're not. If you're certain the noise is coming from the oil pan/trans area, then it sounds like something in the trans. If it's shifting fine and you're not getting an O/D light flashing or check engine light, I'm not sure what it would be.
one other question, if it was the flex plate going bad what would cause it to start grinding after it warms up, is it because it gets hot and expands causing it to rub on the interior?
