Noisy Diesel

I am getting complaints that my e99 F350 PSD is too noisy. Not the exhaust but the rattle of the diesel engine.

I have to admit that it is a little lour.

Would putting some of that self stick foam on the firewall and hood help?

Does Ford make some insulation that would help?

I know the newer trucks are much quieter.

Thanks

i think that it has a lot to do with the fuel distribution.
i have a co-worker with an e99 7.3 and he was talking about how the fuel rails were changed in later trucks to quiet them down.
maybe you could try that?

i wouldnt think that foam would make a big difference though.
just remove your mufflers and they wont hear the rattle-tat-tat any more

EDIT:
i can ask him on monday what it was he did to quiet his truck down if you havent gotten any answer yet

I've heard some loud diesels and think it's the nature of the beast. Almost bought a '99' 7.3 years ago when looking for a truck and that was one thing that turned me off from it. When running equipment all day with the dsl roar I wanted something a little quieter.
I suppose you could get some of that blanket type material you see on the underside of the hood but that will retain heat from the engine and not sure it will even help.

Adding some dynamats will cut down couple of decibels, but will not make the engine quiet. Replacing the engine might be cheaper than rebuilding it with different fuel system and different computers, but the only reasonable option is Cummings. We do have threads with links to the sources.
If you think PS is loud, you are welcome to come and listen to my Detroit 8V71.

Never heard of a difference in fuel rails. I'd like to here more on that subject. I have an e99 and yes as the injectors age they get louder. A lot of this is air in the system and needs to be taken care of.

Who is complaining? Tell them to beat it !. Free Country !

If noise is an issue for you, sorry to say, you have the wrong truck !.

If you go that route with the foam, Just careful on fire hazards.. Plus how will you seal down and out of the bottom and out the front grille. There is where most of the noise is coming from.

Riffraff sells a fuel rail crossover as well as a high pressure crossover. Both of those will help a little. Synthetic oil will help too. If the noise is bothering folks in the cab, Dynamat the doors and the floor.

I have dynamat throughout my cab and the FRX and I can barley hear it not.

The FRx fuel "rail" dead head fix, helps quite a bit with the noise! I built my own FRx and rerouted the fuel system to the heads and it is night and day "to me" difference in sound and part throttle control.

On the drivers side of the fuel bowl. It makes the non return fuel system into a return system. It gets the air out of the fuel journals in the head and I believe helps the "pounding" the injectors seem to make with the dead head fuel system.

Well, I have done lots to increase performance and reliability so I will have to check out the fuel return idea.

Have you done the in-tank fuel mods? To get rid of the potential of the air getting in the fuel system? Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page

I have done the fuel cross over, High pressure cross over and fuel mods. Although it is a happier motor, I didn't notice any sound improvement of the noisy injectors.

Somebody just posted how he was told his #8 was bad and knocking so he thought he'd change it with number2 to see. When he pulled #2 he saw bad o-rings so he replaced them. Funny thing was he did then change the injectors to the other holes, but his noise went away completely. His thoughts were air getting in pass the o-rings caused the number eight to knock. Makes me want to check all of mine.
