Oil Pump Problem?

I have a 1988 F250 5.8L 351, 104,000 miles. The Oil pressure dropped suddenly and the engine started rattling. I shut it off immediately. When I restarted it there was oil pressure for a short time and then it dropped off again and started rattling again. Its not the oil pressure gauge. Mechanic says I need a new engine or this one rebuilt. Could it be just the oil pump that is the problem? It still sounds fine shen started up. I'm not sure it needs a complete rebuild. I thought I would probably try to replace the oil pump myself, as I don't have $2500 for a rebuild, or would I just be wasting my time. Thanks for any replies or comments.

Oil Pump Problem?

Pull the distributor and see if the oil pump is actually turning, I have heard that the shaft can twist off. Oil Screen could also be plugged up. Drain the oil and shine a flashlight in the drain hole to inspect the oil pick up screen I am not sure if you can do this, I just did on my 460. 104,000 clicks is early retirement for a 351.

Oil Pump Problem?

Some oil pumps have a spring pressure valve. If it breaks it could cause problems.

Don't know if yours is inside the pan or outside. If outside it is easy to check.

Good Luck,
