All your front end drive line parts are going to be put through lots of stress due to binding. Also the transfer case. Going straight should be no problem, its just turning.
You will not likely break anything just going to put extra stress on the parts...wearing them out faster.
In addition to wearing the parts out faster that steering wheel will give a good fight if you try to turn it. Do you need to have it in 4x4 for some reason or just asking?

Interestingly, I've picked up about 2 miles per gallon since replacing the hubs. All that noise comes from friction, so I guess it makes sense.

Factory hubs? If so, I'm surprised they lasted that long...
