20's ARE attainable

I live IN the mtns. outside Yosemite,, we have a "few hills" around here,, and I avg. 15+ up to 18 depending on who is driving,, me or her,, we just took a trip of 4600 miles to TX up to MO down to TX and back,, we averaged 19,, and that was with a few tanks of 14-15 buckin some HUGE nasty headwinds down to TX and across AZ 77 mph gusts,, got off the road in Kingman, AZ cause the winds were just horrendous and I was tired of fightin it,,(course the POS Ford rem-man trans went out the week after we got back,, Thank you Lord we were home!! so I think that had a neg effect on mpg's and BTW Thank You and a big hat-tip to STEWARTH for the line on the John Woods Trans!!!) On the way out,, to SA, TX, we avg 20-21,, now mind you, I have straight-piped it, a K&N and Hypertech programmer,,, AND I have 3.73 cogs in it,,, AND I was driving a conservative 72-73 with a few bursts to 100+ to get around morons,,, I do know that 4.10's were an option, and on the V10's 4.30's were available,,, I spoke with 2 guys who had re-geared their V10's from 4.30's to 3.73 and 3.50 and noticed a LARGE increase in mpg's on the highway,, up to 18-20,, they did lose some grunt on take-off, but they don't tow with theirs,,, we are actually talkin about gettin Ex #2,, just cause they don't make em any more,, and we REALLY love it!

I think the price is too high on that black one. modifications like non dot headlights and stuff don't add much to resale value. thats the oldest ex you can buy, a 12 year old vehicle, and the miles are really high. When I bought my truck last year I searched for about 4 months, and I briefly considered a v10. I actually found a 2004 4x4 v10 limited with 70k on it at a carmax (known for being right around kbb prices) for, if I remember right, around 12 or 13k. And that truck would have a lot more life left in it than one thats 4 years older with 100k more on the clock. Don't pay much more than kbb for one unless its in exceptional shape or if it has modifications performed with quality parts that are installed right and are exactly to your taste. Otherwise, you might find yourself wanting to sell or trade in a year or two and you won't be able to without losing money. You really want one now and you might be willing to pay more, but if you are counting on someone else paying more than kbb for your truckk when it comes time to sell or trade, you may find yourself waiting a long time.

You might want to ask him for an e-mail or something or post yours so you can get in touch since discussing sales in this forum is prohibited. Normally you can do private messages, but you'll need to have 25 posts before you can do that. Perhaps post it in the classified section and then agree to move over there?

I'm also looking for my first Excursion (to be primarily used for a few long family trips per year - not daily driving). I'm in Indianapolis; if anyone knows of any deals in the IN/OH area, please let me know.

I've looked at three so far:

A 2000 w/140K; $8000 - seemed like it had been treated rough
A 2001 w/110K; $8000 - GORGEOUS and clearly well maintained; I would buy it in a second, but the 3rd row seat is M.I.A.
A 2002 w/227K; $5000 - Looks good, but the miles are a little scary

I wouldn't let a 3rd row seat hold you back. They aren't easy to come by, but they are out there. For the rest of the truck to be really nice, it would be worth it.

For the '02, it depends if it is a 7.3 or V10. I'd consider it if 7.3, but that is kinda high mileage for a V10.

Hint: Check the classifieds section, I have a 3rd row seat listed there from a 2002.

v10's are thirsty. numerically lower gears may help, but if you tow they will get you out of your power band. you will also take off from a dead stop slower. beyond that, if you have a lift, take it back to stock. Take off brush guards. put on lower rolling resistance tires. Less weight will equal more mpgs. But more than anything, google "hypermiling" and do what they say. don't stop at red lights, just slow down till it turns green to avoid wasting fuel idling and taking off. Draft semi trucks. Basically just drive like there's an egg under the throttle.

There isn't much for the v10 that will be a night and day difference in mpg. intake and exhaust may give you a few tenths at the expense of a louder truck. thats about it.

If I'm reading things right...

The diesel is generally more expensive to buy and maintain, but better in terms of mileage and longevity? I may go look at a 2004 diesel tomorrow (125K; $16,000).

The higher maintenance wouldn't bother me that much; I'm not planning on putting more than 10K miles a year on it, so it would be a less frequent expense.

10k on a diesel will be at least 2 oil changes. At the recommended 3k interval it will be 3. 6.0's use oil to fire the injectors, among other things, so many recommend frequent oil changes. Oil is literally the lifeblood of these engines. Using motorcraft oil and filters, they run about $80 each. so $160 for 2 or $240 for 3. Fuel filters every other oil change. They run about $50 for the pair. So you will probably want to pull the filters when you first buy the truck to make sure they are good, and change the filters. At the recommended maintenance interval you might be looking at $340 for that 10k in a year. Compared to a gas truck, with 3 oil changes at $30 each for $90. Trust me, it does add up! And with a 6.0 there is no guarantee it will last longer than a v10. Plenty of both on the boards with a quarter million on the clock, and plenty of both that needed major work done with under 125k on the clock as well. If you are considering a 6.0, you need to do your homework first to learn about the FICM, oil cooler, and EGR cooler/system. Its mandatory education before you go look at one, and overlooking something small may cost you a few grand in repairs down the road. I also consider it mandatory to pull an oasis report from a ford dealer on a truck you are considering to see what work its had done by ford. Also recommend buying a scangauge II or similar device to check any truck you are considering. Learn what "ect/eot delta" means.

Talking I bought it!!!!!

I finally found one! I drove down to Miami (6) hours and drove her. Other than the tires being a little loud, she is awesome! She drove PERFECTLY all the way back up. Got 15.5 mpg.

2000 V10 Limited 2wd. Just clicked 115k miles, paid $8200.
Akuzo rims, Nitto grappler tires with 25%the tread left (that's why they're loud), remote start, auto page alarm, custom head and tail lights.
