I NEED AN EXCURSION!!! (seriously)
we just took a trip of 4600 miles to TX up to MO down to TX and back,, we averaged 19,, and that was with a few tanks of 14-15 buckin some HUGE nasty headwinds down to TX and across AZ 77 mph gusts,, got off the road in Kingman, AZ cause the winds were just horrendous and I was tired of fightin it,,(course the POS Ford rem-man trans went out the week after we got back,, Thank you Lord we were home!! so I think that had a neg effect on mpg's and BTW Thank You and a big hat-tip to STEWARTH for the line on the John Woods Trans!!!
I do know that 4.10's were an option, and on the V10's 4.30's were available,,, I spoke with 2 guys who had re-geared their V10's from 4.30's to 3.73 and 3.50 and noticed a LARGE increase in mpg's on the highway,, up to 18-20,, they did lose some grunt on take-off, but they don't tow with theirs,,, we are actually talkin about gettin Ex #2,, just cause they don't make em any more,, and we REALLY love it!
Just trying to save you from getting banned...
I've looked at three so far:
A 2000 w/140K; $8000 - seemed like it had been treated rough
A 2001 w/110K; $8000 - GORGEOUS and clearly well maintained; I would buy it in a second, but the 3rd row seat is M.I.A.
A 2002 w/227K; $5000 - Looks good, but the miles are a little scary

For the '02, it depends if it is a 7.3 or V10. I'd consider it if 7.3, but that is kinda high mileage for a V10.
Hint: Check the classifieds section, I have a 3rd row seat listed there from a 2002.
Im looking for help with the fuel milage on my v10 if anyones able.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
There isn't much for the v10 that will be a night and day difference in mpg. intake and exhaust may give you a few tenths at the expense of a louder truck. thats about it.
The diesel is generally more expensive to buy and maintain, but better in terms of mileage and longevity? I may go look at a 2004 diesel tomorrow (125K; $16,000).
The higher maintenance wouldn't bother me that much; I'm not planning on putting more than 10K miles a year on it, so it would be a less frequent expense.
