A question about pulling the codes..

Fellers I'm going to pull the codes on the 1986 F 150/302 this weekend and read the instructions from several locations. Many thanks by the way for all the help. Anyways since I'll be doing this alone I got to wondering....can I hook up the test light and NOT hook up the ground at first. Then reach inside the cab, turn on the ignition switch then go and ground the proper terminal and procede with the test??? Or does it have to be grounded and then turn on the ignition switch and watch the testlight from inside the cab?? I'm just pondering. Thanks! Audie...the Oldfart..

I believe it takes a couple of seconds for the light to start flashing....OR you could hook up longer leads and have the light inside the cab with you.

IIRC it's around 10 seconds for the light show to begin.

What I do is, hook the test light up then set it so I can see it from the drivers seat. Just looking thru the gap between the bottom of the hood and cowl area.
