Oil type

Had my oil changed at the dealership yesterday. Work receipt showed they put in 10-30W in my 6.4L. Manual shows it being acceptable, but preferred is 15-40W. Stick with 10-30W or ask why they did not use 15-40W?

Temps are not too hot yet. So unless your towing and running up the heat you should be fine.

Just insure for the summer you have them put it the 15-40W.

I'll be towing our 5th wheel next month for about 3 hrs one way up here in Michigan. I suppose I should be safe - not too warm yet.

I could be wrong but don't 6.4 come from the factory with 10w-30 or is that just the 6.7. Probably cause they had more 10w-30 in stock and that is the preferred general oil for the new truck and just figured if it is good enough for the new one...it is good enough for the 6.4?

On BITOG there are a lot of good looking UOAs from CJ4 10w-30 oils so I would not worry.

Well there you have it.

Regardless, I wouldn't worry too much about a 10w-30, especially in your climate this time of year.

BTW- I use the Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5W 40 year round. Probably a little over kill at 5K oil changes, but it's always clean and seems to flow well in winter and still keep the engine cool & well lubed in the summer heat. Yes, the 10W 30 is acceptable, but why bother with it when 5W 40 is good ALL the time and covers the greatest temp range? I would still ask the dealership their logic on the 10W 30

I don't remember exactly. I think it's about $21. a gal. for the Rotella T6 at Walmart (probably about twice as much as 15W 40 Dino oil). I haven't priced any 10W 30 oil, so I don't know the difference in cost. To me, it's still cheap insurance to keep my engine in top shape.

Yeah I think T6 is something in that range around here 21-22, most gallons of dino oil are 12-13 and if you buy them in 2.5 gallon or 5 gallon buckets it drops to about $11 or so a gallon. 10W-30s still seem to be a bit of a rare bird in New England, with the lone exception being T5 10w-30 which usually goes for around 16 bucks a gallon. So typically T6, which is a very good oil by the by, is 50-70% more a gallon than conventional. Does that 50-70% marginal cost translate to 50-70% lower wear numbers on a UOA....at least in my experiences no. I also don't run extended drain intervals and it frankly doesn't get cold enough in Southeast Mass to warrant a need for 5w when a 10w, and in all honesty, a 15w oil are all up to the job. My apologies to the OP I have a bit.

Back on point, they polly threw the 10w-30 in there cause it is the spec'd fluid for a 6.7, FoMoCo says its kosher to run in a 6.4 and more and more 6.0's are getting filled with it cause of customers complaining of cold start issues.
