I recently bought a 96 F-250 PSD with 143k miles. The tranny has never been serviced, so I suspect it’s about due.
Lately, I have noticed that when I step on the gas from a standstill, it takes a long time for the tranny to shift into 1st gear. It's like when you’re driving a stick and you rev the engine to 2000 RPM and then very slooooowly let the clutch out. This only happens when shifting into 1st gear from a dead standstill. It also only happens when the tranny is warm. When it’s cold, it shifts normal.
I was thinking torque converter, because the transmission shifts nice and smooth otherwise. Any ideas?
Are you talking about shifting from park into drive and having it take a long time to engage? Or does it act like it's requiring a higher RPM to get any power past the torque converter?
