For about 300-400 bucks you can make the near extinct 410 merc engine, it's a nice little 360/390 stroker. Nice torque and still is not a killer on gas.
You didn't specify the detail of auto or manual. Yes if it's a 4-speed then yes just the bell housing. Unless you are being given the 351m and all the stuff to do the swap it might be easier and cheaper to find a 390 or 360. They are around.
while changing the bell housing may solve that problem you will still need different engine perches/mounts, exhaust, maybe radiator hoses? Did you get all of the accessories (alternator, power steering pump, a/c, etc.) with the 351m? They may be different and/or require different mounting brackets.
What you are asking is doable, but might be a lot of work.
ive done this swap for a guy only using a 400 instead and come to find out the juice isn't worth the squeeze. It can be done but as others have stated you need the towers mounts exhaust all the accessory brackets a different starter. You can use the rad hoses from the 360. Does the 351m come with a flywheel or a flexplate? Cuz you may need that too. I'm sure there is more that i'm leaving out but this is basics to get it in the truck anyway.
Good luck if you decide to do it, good boy if you don't.
Thank you everybody. Yes it is a manual trans. And my starter is hangin up now so I'd need one of those anyway. I'm not swapping for power, I'm swapping because the 360 died and I can find a 351m cheap and quick. This is a project truck but also not a weekend driving truck. I really do appreciate all the help.
If its a project and you dont need the truck to get around, I think you would be much better off rebuilding/stroking the 360 to a 390, much happier preformance wise as well. You say the 360 died, is the block ok?
I meant project being it needs a lot of work, but yes it is my second vehicle. I don't know if the block is any good or not yet. I will probably have it checked out because they are so hard to come by. But as I understand they aren't in high demand are they?
