Man what a day! Parked the 2001 F250 in the drive way went out a couple of hours latter and found that my dash had somehow ignited. seems i got lucky because the windows didn't blow out so it smothered fairly quickly, firemen said it could have been a real mess.
Bad luck is that i found out i don't have comp, some insurance screw up that i am looking into, but really beside the point.
My 7.3 only has 30k miles since engine rebuild so i need to look at repairing this truck. I am currently unemployed so a project is not out of the picture. looking for opinions, take a look a the pics below and let me know what you think...thx!
Looks to me like you need to take the dash completely apart and figure out what is all wrecked, then head to the junkyard and look for parts. I'm guessing you will end up replacing pretty much the entire dash and most of the components behind the dash, probably most of the wiring harnesses too. If possible, try to figure out exactly where the fire srarted so you can make sure that problem is taken care of so it doesn't happen again.
Ouch. Sorry to hear that. The dash is plastic and just snaps into place, of course there's a high probability that your dash pieces will no longer snap or unsnap from each other.
I'd say the first thing you need to do is unplug the batteries if you haven't already, and then remove the air bags so nothing accidentally pops while you dig into it. Let us know if you need instructions on removing the airbags.
Then get some of the U shaped tools to remove your radio and pull that out of the way. After that it's a matter of trying to peel the plastic dash pieces apart. We'd love to see pics of your progress as you do this.
No i do not... key was not in the ignition, i had driven it 2 hours prior, the only switch in that area is the 4wd control. I have been all over the web and am surprised at how often this happens. I see something like this, i would suspect that someone did some work and screwed up. I am an engineer i work on my cars and boats often, i have never even had to replace a fuse on this truck, and have never been behind the dash... i guess i am/was a bit naive, i thought this could only happen if you foil wrapped a fuse! needless to say i am of a different opinion now.
Once i get it apart maybe something will jump out at me.
