Here is a pic of my Toyota Power Steering Conversion using a stock 3 on the tree column shift. The key is to slide the steering shaft far enough out the bottom of the column, weld or pin a steering coupler to the shaft and slide the whole assembly up inside the column. Make sure you also install a centering bearing/device towards the bottom of the column to keep the shaft centered inside the column. I used a modified polyurethane suspension bushing for my centering device.
Once everything is together, the column as a whole unit can be slid unto the toyota spline shaft and tightened. Note: To make it all work, the steering wheel must be removed so the shaft can be moved up and down as necessary during the install.
Once the column is together and attached you can put the floor plates back in and attach the column to the support drop (part that attaches to the dash). You have to fab up a bracket to hold the column to the plates (ignore the wiring in my picture). I used a u shaped bracket and screwed it to the floor plates. Some people make a bracket out of angles.
Once everything works fine, attach the steering wheel and check for clearances.
Also, here is a picture of my power steering pump on a 223. I used a double 3/8" pulley on a GM alternator running a Saginaw Style pump off a 1986 Ford E150 van. The v-belt is an ACCULINK adjustable v-belt which works great for this purpose.
Looks great!! I have a old column I am going to experiment on..... Looks like it was made for the truck. I am running a 312 Y Block, with a original 57 ford pwr steering pump
I just bought one of these ram power assist kits used on ebay but after reading this thread I don't think I want it. It came with the modified pitman arm for F!. Anybody interested I paid 300.
Houston we have a problem. Swapping the stock steering box with a manual toyota box. So my 55 has a 351W and FMX tranny, to get the old box out I had to pull the exhaust back for clearance. To put the manual Toyota box in I had to mount it to the mount first then attach the mount to the frame. To reattach the exhaust, hmmm, the Toyota box is now in the way of the header and exhaust pipe.
I guess this conversion won't work with the 351W block. Shoot, hope mid fifty will take back conversion kit.

Anybody have any advice?
You will probably have to go to headers made for that application, like block huggers. Sanderson Headers will get you exactly what you need for your 351w motor and toy steering box..
I cant see anything wrong with using a ram all my trucks have them although they are five times bigger. You dont fiddle with the pitman
are you disect the drag link thats where the control valve goes.
If I can steer a 18,000lb truck with a snow plow with one finger
and the concern is a pick up?????????
The ram assist was not the direction I was heading. I was just trying to improve on the steering with very little modification and everything I read directed me to the toy conversion.
As for the block hugger headers, I will look around just trying to keep from having to redo the entire exhaust system.
I ordered kingpin sets from LMC, how hard is it to remove and install. Any tips out therefrom the experts?

PS: when I put in the toy steering box I had to remove a axle bumper that attached to the frame just under the box. There are two attached to the frame, the other is dead center above the leaf springs. Is this a problem if i only have one?
