I'm not much help as I don't have one, but if I was in the market for a new controller to replace my Tekonsha Voyager, which serves me well for nearly being antiquated, I would be getting a Prodigy P3, installed one in my brothers truck and really seems nice, aside from every towing or RV forum it seems to be the "winner".
This is where I'm at also, I wish my Voyager would mess up so I could justify getting the P3. The damn thing has been in my '79 then '86 & now my 2000 & it does just what it is supposed to do. So I just keep saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it" but I would like to have one of the newer models. Everyone that I know that has one says the P2 or now the P3 is the way to go, maybe someday I'll join the 21st century...lol

Same deal for me. The bad thing is people don't deem them good enough to pull when junking car and the local yard lets me have them for $5. I think I have 4 now.

Should I have to replace it, I'll probably go with the MaxBrake. very similar to the Brakesmart. It uses actual brake pressure to signal the trailer brakes. Trailer brakes are applied with the same force as the vehicle brake. no leveling, no hassle, works in reverse, no lock up when going down or uphill.
automaticlly checks the trailer when you plug into it, so it knows how many axles, and what type of system its hooked to.

I didn't know anything like this still existed anymore. I had one in my 83' and they where great. I was under the impression ABS put an end to them. Maybe inertia controls caught up to them performance wise then priced them out of the market?
I am in the market for one and once again you guys have helped me make my choice! I also identify with you Dennis that there are few times when I am able to help and it is a great thing when I get the chance because of all the help I have received from this brotherhood.
I think you may have accidentally missed those features on the website...listed below.
Features:
Applies power to the trailer brakes in proportion to vehicle's deceleration when brakes are applied
No level adjustment necessary - it adjusts itself to varying terrain as you drive
Works proportionally in reverse - great for backing into tough spots
Specs: Dimensions: 3-5/8" (W) x 4-5/8" (L) x 1-3/8" (H)
Boost levels increase power up 0%, 13% and 25%
180 degree vertical plane operating range
Can be mounted between -90 degree (straight down) and 90 degree (straight up)
Having one, I also know that it can be disabled easily for reverse.
Pop, like another member, I switched from a basic U-haul to the P3 and love it. The ease in which it adjusts, how it's adjustable for different sized trailers, and how smooth it applies the brakes is great. I also find the "boost" feature very nice. I've used it on everything from small twin axle trailers to a 30' goose neck where I was grossing 26K, and it works great every time.
Thanks for the info. Are those specs for the P2 or P3? I wish the Tekonsha website had a place for side by side comparisons because I found it difficult to compare features...they all seam pretty close with only minor differences. From what I saw online, the specs for the P2 were
Reverse battery protection for both vehicle and breakaway
Designed to work with electronic over hydraulic brake systems
Numerous mounting options - including 360 degree vertical rotation
Digital display depicts voltage delivery to trailer during braking
No level adjustment necessary - it adjusts itself to varying terrain as you drive
Great for backing into tough spots! Works proportionally in reverse with the ability to disable when not needed
Produces stops that are in proportion to vehicles deceleration rate
"Boost" feature gives users the ability to apply more initial trailer braking power when towing heavier trailers
Continual diagnostics check for proper connection, shorted magnet conditions and much more
Quick and easy disconnect feature allows user to remove and store the control when not in use
Electric trailer brake control for up to 4 braking axles
Limited lifetime warranty
For the P3 the only items they listed were
1-4 axle trailers
Distinct, easy to see LCD display with multiple color and contrast options
User can customize to choose English, French or Spanish display
Allows the user to switch between Electric and Hydraulic brakes
The original "Boost" feature allows for different levels of customized braking
Compact, dash-hugging design
Unique, easy-to-use, clip-mounting systems
Quick disconnect for easy storage; convenient storage pouch included
Limited lifetime warranty
They did have some videos on their website that was pretty cool but still didn't help me decide which one I wanted to get so I decided to give them a call and see what I could find out. According to the person who I talked to, they said the P3 was basically designed for hydraulic systems but was also backwards compatible for electric brakes as well. It also has multiple languages for the display and the display could be configured in a few different colors.
The P2 had a triple axis accelerometer and was a little better suited for a variety of terrain since it constantly adjusts itself. I think they also said the P2 model was recently upgraded so it pretty much has all the same features as the P3 with the added feature of full 360 degree mounting positions. The P3 had some restrictions on mounting angle, I think the guy said it needed to be within 70 degrees of horizontal if I remember correctly...
When I pressed the person on the phone for a recommendation, he said the P2 would probably be best for my application since I do a lot of mountain towing but he later followed up with a comment saying they both were a premium controller and I couldn't really go wrong either way.
Went from a cheap time-delay controller installed by my RV dealer to a P3 a couple of years ago. As far as I know, the P3 is the only one with the level of diagnostic troubleshotting information to help you narrow down a problem, which is what sold me on it. It is MUCH smoother than the time-delay cheapie!

You could always justify it as a safety upgrade. It'd be like upgrading from drum to disc brakes. Sure, the old one worked, but the new one is better and safer.

I hear you bud but every time I think about it I can find a half dozen other things to spend the $$ on
I've got a Curt discovery. I had used draw-tite controllers for years since they replaced one for free for me many, many moons ago on a unit that was 5 years old. I figured with a warranty like that, why not stick with them. I then needed a new box in a hurry when my draw-tite died. Curt was on the shelf at the closest place so I went with it. I really like it better than my old one. I've used the prodigy controllers before, but don't care for the leveling stuff, and they didn't seem any better than the draw-tite that I had been using.

I saw he posted and had to check the date of the thread to see if this was an old one that got dug up.
Nice to hear from you Jeremy. How's that cummins holding up? Still got the truck?
Somehow, that image of Franko and his trailer full of cement igloos comes to mind......

Sorry I missed this thread Pop You mean the load that killed my transmission...
I got a deal on a UHaul brake controller. (I think i paid $70 for their $130 unit thanks to a friend who worked there)
Its far from the best, but it does what It's supposed to do. I've heard great things about the Prodigy also.
Love my prodigy p3. You can move the p3 from one vehicle to another, you just need the wiring plug for the second vehicle. The prodigy works smooth at any speed and any breaking action, plus it will tell you if there is a problrm in the breaking system wiring.
