Need some advice and what better place is there to ask but here.
I'm looking at a used F-350 XLT Larait Turbo Diesel 2WD Duelly Super Cab. It has 230K and loaded with everything. Truck is extremely clean with only two dents on top of bed rails in the same spot on both sides. I was told those dents happend when there was a goose neck on the truck and it got bumped there.
New upper ball joints were installed and tires.
What other items should I be looking at on a truck like this. What about the turbo? What do I look for if a turbo has been abused?
This will be my first Turbo Diesel and know they run forever if taken care of. The truck is in a different state and will be driving up to look at it this weekend.
Any and all information is greatly appreciated.
BTW, the owner is asking 15,900 for the truck. Whacha think?
What year is it? The miles are getting up there but i know a guy that works on a fleet of 15 Powerstrokes and all of them have over 500,000 miles with no major problems. As far as what to look for im not sure. Hope this helps.
One of the first things that I would do is a VIN check through any one of several sites. that way you can be sure that the vehicle has not been wrecked or somthing. It may cost a little but if your not vehicle has come from another state it will show up. Also I would probably carry the vehicle down to a Ford dealer or service tech to have it checked out. The year of the vehicle is important. What does the NADA book or the black book show on the vehicle.
Another possible cause of the dents could be from having a 5th wheel trailer hooked up wrong and the front of the trailer denting the beds. I've come close but now really watch that kind of thing.
Good luck with whatever you do.
From what I have found this year on up is more deireable because of the SC having the doors open. I really like that option.
Jim you're right on the 5th wheel being hooked up wrong. Someone else told me this today. Truck doesn't have a tailgate. Has a Windgate. I'll have to get a tailgate if I buy. Jim do you have any pic's of your truck? Have you done any engine mod's to your truck
Retail on the truck it 19K. Wow, that sounds high for a high miler. Going to get a carfax report tomorrow from a friend of mine at a dealer.
I would also check to see if the trans, eng, etc are still original. You may find out that its been replaced or not. Not having the tailgate doesn't suprise me. When the 5th wheels come out they usually take out the tail gates. I have one (extra) where are you located we might be able to work somthing out?.
Retail on that truck sounds about right. You have to remember that the SD's hold thier value. the miliage that you talked about isn't really high. I have seen higher but with no damage.
I don't have any pics yet. I am supposed to be getting a digital in the next couple of days and will be posting a bunch of them. I've done a lot of work and would kind of like to show it off. Wish me luck, i'm not real confident on the posting of pics yet. we'll see how it goes.
That's cool. I'd like to see the pic's. I do have a question. You do have a Diesel, right? I was reading your thread and was wondering what is the AirRaid intake in your signature? Is your truck a 2WD or 4WD?
I'm in Missouri and will need a tail-gate if I buy this truck. Send me a PM and let me know what you might want for the gate. What color is it?
I don't have an answer to your second question but I just bought a 99 F-250 SD Turbo Super Cab 4X4 with 170,000 turns on it. The things I was looking for when I purchased was any mechanical records or knowledge of the truck. Then I inspected the truck over completely (bumper to bumper) looking for leaks or cracks any sign of neglect. In your case 230k in a 2-wheel drive is more than likely highway hauling with a fifth wheel. The first question in my mind is what was he hauling? That will help to determine what kind of drivetrain damage (if any ) to look for. I would also have it taken in to a mechanic a put on a scope to check it out.
In my case the previous owner cracked housing on tranny and had to replace @ 140,000. I can't think of anything else at the moment, but hope this might help.:
HP junkie is right. service records or somthing like that would be nice.
xavir: the tail gate is white. stock. we might be able to work somthing out. I'll always try to help another FTE member, guess its part of being part of somthing. My truck is a 2WD. Its a little rare on this site but each to thier own. Sometimes I do wish that I had gone with the 4WD but still am happy with what I do have.
