My dad was a pioneer of some sorts. He had this air cleaner on his truck from new. It is an oil bath unit. I plan to re-use it on the truck again. I am thinking a big truck (maybe the same era as the Super Duty emblems and scoop on the hood) Can anyone identify it? Wonder if I could find a snorkle piece to screw on the end of it? Should I hook a hose to the nipple on the top when I use it??
Probably the stock oil bath cleaner, they were available on the "F"s as an option, usually on fleet or farm trucks.
The snorkel looks like the same one used on the standard dry element filter.
Here's a low mileage '73 with the oil bath filter.
I think that oil bath filter unit is from an industrial 361 FT engine-something like a UHaul truck.........I guess oil bath filters were kinda messy back in the day to clean/change.on't know the recommended interval for use/change and oil was pretty cheap then too-I also don't know how much oil it takes to fill one up-quart may be? I guess you can still buy cheap straight 3o non-detergent oil for them pretty cheap-cheaper than a paper filter.........I don't think they used "snorkels"
I wish mine had a sticker still! While I don't run it, they are more for dusty areas. I they do a great job and require less than a qt with the oil bath needing almost no maintenance. I don't know the change out schedule but it had to be much longer than paper.
Makes me want to check it's fit on the '78 Yes they could be messy! But I think a lot of that was because you never took the darn thing off the carb! dirt buildup!
Supercab may be onto something. My dad was buddies with a guy who worked on big trucks as well as Uhaul's. Don't know why he added it,but I do remember the original air cleaner that was on the truck over the barn for years. Dad always tried to mke his truck look like a big rig. The sticker is in bad shape and unfortunately it will be gone soon as I am having the cleaner powder coated a nice shiny black. Maybe one day I will come across a snorkle like the above pic.
Like Old style says, yes they can be messy.I spilled the oil all over me wen I went to moms and picked it up. Guess it's better on me than all over in my Jeep Grand Cherokee..
Yeah, we used to have a '76 F-150 that ran an oil-bath on a 390. We usually cleaned it out every oil change, but that was under some super-dusty conditions. On the highway you could probably get by with once or twice a year.
I had the same air cleaner on my 70 360FE.. its DSO is Salt Lake City and sold out of Idaho - not a fleet nor a commercial vehicle per se. It is safely stored away along with its blue snorkel (go figure!).
Stock air cleaners tend to be restrictive. I ditched it in favor of a K&N filter and a genuine "Hi-Po" Ford open element air cleaner housing as pictured below. It now has better throttle response (when the 2V ain't leaking!). Notice the domed top... not peaked like Edelbrock or them generic universal housings:
