Okay my truck has the correct 460 motor mounts but still doesn't seem to sit correctly. The oil filter is way out of line with the hole in the cradle for getting to it, prior owner did cut a new hole for access to it but this just doesn't seem right. Is there another component needed for swapping the 460 into a 351W original cradle? The truck is an 86 F-350.
I have the correct manifolds coming and an appointment at the pipe doctor so I am hoping to get the engine where she belongs prior to laying out the bucks for custom bent pipes.
Thanks all,
Oh is there a difference between manual and hydraulic linkage bellhouses that would cause this problem?
I'm not sure about the engine cradle for a 2 wheel drive, but on a 80 - up 4x4 the oil filter does not line up with the hole your familiar with using. The filter is forward of the hole in the cradle.
Ford installed an offset oil filter adapter on the 460 engines to turn the filter toward the front of the engine.
You can also use a remote oil filter adapter kit which is what most people do on this swap on the 80 - up frames.
I have a '86 F350/460 & the previous owner attacked it with the Gas Axe to get filter clearance. It didn't occur to the guy just to put the adaptor on....
Right now it's going back together with relocated filters (2). the kit was about $40 from Jegs. Gonna mount them on the frame rail back under the drivers seat area. Gonna mount a bit of diamond plate to protect em from flying debris.
Great info and pictures. Now that I know about the oil filter think I will go with the remote adapter down the road. Took a look at the Ford adapter on E-bay pretty slick trick by Ford. Think I'll use a dual filter and mount it up on the fire wall somewhere or on the frame as mentioned.
I have two last questions before I am toatally at rest on this issue. Should the fan be outside of the fan shroud? The fan and shroud are both correct for truck and engine. The top of the fan is completely clear of the shroud and the bottom is only barley into the shroud. Second issue, with stock manifold and air cleaner the back of the air cleaner is touching the firewall, even where the firewall undercuts the wiper cowling. In affect a taller manifold or larger aircleaner is out of the question.
Truck is a 4X4.
Superdave you helped me out with this before and I thank you for your patience.
Anyone have pictures of the 460 mounted in the frame.
Sadly after my recent experiences correcting some issues on this truck I have a hard time trusting any of the previous owners work. Been struggling to get here inspectable for two months just one thing after another.
Just found out that mine has a *unique* PS Pump bracket. Found one for $10 at the salvage yard that looked identical.. However, NOTHING on it lines up with the old one except one bloody bolt hole. At least that explains the ***** up some doofus made of welding it together, thought it looked a bit suspect to be OEM Ford...
Hmm, sounds to me like your transmission mount might be missing. Clearance is close at the firewall, but, nothing touches, and, a missing trans mount would alow everything to drop about 2" or so at the tail, and, would likley cause your problems..
Yes I have had more than one "unique" part on my truck. My first mission was to get all the correct brackets and the wiring harness. It dawned on me how ugly it could be when I needed a PS hose and got one for the 460 and discovered that I still had all the "accessories" for the 351W makes getting parts fun.
Thanks for the pictures. Looks like you definately have more clearence than I do and are squared up and into the fan shroud better than mine. I'll take a look at the transmission mount.
The reason I made reference to the 80 - up frames and engine cradles is that they are the same as the 83 frame. And a lot of 460's get swapped into the 80, 81, and 82 trucks and Bronco's to replace the 351M's and 400's, as was my case. So it was just a general reference thing.
I am aware that the 460 was not re-offered until 83 as a factory option in the pickups. But they were in the 79's.
Heh heh heh...I'm sure you've seen the L&L mounts on my website ---- those things will last THROUGH the 4th world war!! Their parts are expensive, but worth every penny. My 1 1/2 year old headers from them still look brand new - not a spot of rust on them.
Superdave: Actually, the F250HD/F350 engine cradle is different(sure suprised me), if I find something with a small block yanked, I'll take some pics to compare, I have a diesel truck apart ATM. I think the engine mount brackets would fit, but, the 250/350 cradle doesn't have the cut out for the smallblock oil filter, Instead of the normal PH8A style filter, the 351W's installed with this crossmember run a half size filter.
And, yes, they were in the 79's, I can just never type it right... LOL
Now, if I could just find the L&L part # for a stock replacement mount.... I'm gonna yank my 460 soon, oil pan is leaking, can't tighten the exhaust on the manifolds, the pass. side engine mount looks to be toast, and I have headers and a cam to install...
