Looking to ressurect one of my '79 F250s. I'ts got a 351 and I've got a 400 that was in the one I just dismantled.
Both are in need of complete rebuild but, in light of my time restraints, I'm just gonna get a reman'd long block.
Question is...who's got the best deal....not meaning cheapest...rather best value/quality/reliability that perhaps someone here has had some experience with?
Give it time huh? Out of 115 views to date, which isnt much really, you need the right FTE member that has purchased a reman LB to weigh in. I'm not one. I clicked on your thread out of curiosity thinking maybe you had bought one and were offering an opinion.
I can't answer your question but in my own mind I have a good reason. Again all my own opinion. If it were me I'd just swap to a 460. You should be able to find one for $300 or less and it will most likely be in useable condition.
Personally I'd take a junk yard 460 over a reman 400/351m any day. You should be able to convert to a 460 for less than a reman 400 costs and have greater longevity in my opinion.
I am in the military and we have used jasper diesels in the past, They seem to high quality. If it was me, I would look to get an engine/ trans from a JY and do a modern transplant.
OK..thanks for the replies anyway....I thought surely someone would have bought one. I've rebuilt dozens of engines of all kinds...but around here good automotive machine shops are scarce...and so is my time.
My thing is..I don't want to spend so much time on the motor...rather spend it fixing other stuff the isn't easily bought.....at this point I'm kinda looking at a 6.0L Vortec LQ9 pull-out.....OMG! not a Chevy!
I'm no help either, but I am interested. I plan on replacing/rebuilding my 400 next spring.
Let us know what you find out as obviously there are a decent amount of people interested in what you find.
Absolutely........from what I can research, there's some performance that can be wrung out of a 400 without a great degree of difficulty.....cam/timing upgrade, manifold/carb or even EFI set-up....headers etc.....
Sometimes I tend to become a bit impatient when it comes to getting on with a project...but in some manner, it will come together in the end.
I think part the reason for few replies comes down to one simple thing. The 351M/400 suffered from the same thing that plaqued the 68+ 360/390. Lowered compression ratio and cam timing/tuning that was more focused on smog compliance than power.
Standard "run of the mill" reman long blocks are built to stock specs, and the vast majority of truck owners want to get more power/torque than the stock specs allow for.
As you mentioned, it's rather easy to gain some extra performance from these engines by adding a better cam profile and timing, bumping the comp ratio up a bit, and improving the breathing ability. Done correctly, these can really perk up an engine, without adversely affecting the MPG. This is what most owners tend to do, rather than just buying a stock reman. The cost is about the same, but the results can have a wide margin between a stock reman, and a DIY "improved" build.

That's what I'm seeing with most of the reman'd vendors I've found. They all say "smog in heads" and as someone mentioned earlier, a later model fuel injected set-up may be the way to go.
I just need to figure out what combination will work the best. I'm a little hesitant about swapping to a 460 but there seems to be a concensus that it's the motor of choice.
Now at the sake of getting dissed off the site, I'm not opposed to using a "competitor's" powerplant. I've done several swaps to later models and I have a "sweet" '92 5.7 TPI motor in my rock crawler Jeep. I LOVE computerized fuel injection but just don't have any experience working with Ford's EFI......even so....I do believe this....the only real trucks wear the blue oval.....!
Fellow FTE member NBC-Steve is doing this - he ordered one from Texas. Waiting to hear what shop he went with. I am also curious for when the time comes for me.
Didnt all the 351M/400s have the smog deal built into the heads? I think this series of engines were designed to comply with the smog regulations coming on board at the time as opposed to the older engines that had been retrofitted externally with AIR injection
