My mechanic says I have an issue with my rear differential in my Ford 2004 explorer. he drained it, added new synthetic and lucas antislip additive. It helped a little but it is still not right. how difficult is it to rebuild the rear differential??? I know the CV axles need to be pulled and the diff dropped to rebuild it. A rebuild kit can be bought at napa.

What is the specific complaint? Noise? If yes, need to know more. If not noise, but simply non-slip feature is no longer working effectively, you have two options: leave it alone, and drive as though you did not have the limited slip feature, or go ahead and have the "guts" rebuilt.
If noise is the complaint, it is wise to CONFIRM that the noise is origionating within the differential housing, and is not the result of a bad C-V joint or wheel bearing, either of which is a less costly "fix" than most any internal repair on the differential itself. imp
thanks for the reply .Imp.
I am getting a chattering/shuddering noise, especially after it warms up and especially on take offs. The wheel bearings were just replaced and my mechanic says the CV axles are fine. Do you know if a differential out of an 04 Sport Trac is compatible with my 04 Explorer? Thanks
