hey guys... so im roughly 800 miles from my last regen....i posted up a few weeks back about the problem i was having with a blue-ish white smoke coming from the exhaust and a fluttering (exhaust leak type sound) coming from the dpf area on a daily basis.... so the dealer eventually concluded the truck seemed to be stuck in regen... so they reflashed the truck and put it through the regen manually...so the truck has been fine since then... but i have logged the mileage on tripB since then and i am now at about 800 miles or so... the truck is starting to make the fluttering sound again... i called the dealer and told them...they said that the truck shouldnt regen yet... i thought it should every 400-600 miles but maybe im misinformed... they said to bring it in for the sound anyway... any thoughts?... and what should i expect for mileage between regens?... the truck is a daily driver...lots of city driving (i live in boston)... no towing or real hard work... the truck only gets worked during the winter for plowing but we didnt get any snow this year!!!
Mine regens every 250miles +/-50miles. Most of my driving is slow around-town driving with maybe 30% freeway. I don't remember going beyond 350miles freeway before getting a regen. The algorithm for regen is supposedly triggered on miles driven as well as pressure drop across the DPF
I always notice the truck feels constipated and bit more sluggish than usual before regen starts
I think Senix is right... there's a 600mile default where regens start regardless. If you press system-info, does it say cleaning exhaust at the end?
I've read a couple of guys have sensors that were out of spec and that led to either excessive regens or plugged DPFs. The problem I see is there's no real way to know for sure whether the sensor is out of spec since there's no reference to use for comparison. As long as the ECM reads something while the engine is running compared to when the engine is off, it thinks it's ok.

if you have the latest ford flash, or tuning based on the latest ford flash.
The earlier flash displays it during the entire event.
City driving will lend itself to much less time/miles between regens. If you are short tripping (a few miles to work/home then shut down) this will be #1 hard on the engine and #2 not allow regens to work properly. Get the truck out on the open road and let it cook.
I reread the cmalley's original post and noticed he's in stop-and-go traffic.
If regen starts in stop and go traffic, the engine will stay in regen and try to heat up the DPF in futility. Need to get the truck out on open road with constant throttle to let things heat up and burn off. The key is constant throttle so the heat going into the DPF is consistent.
I recently logged a regen with my AutoEnginuity scanner. Soot starts to burn seriously at around 1000F and it took me 10minutes of regen in stop-and-go traffic to get the DPF that hot. The rest started cooking as soon as I got out to freeway.
The service advisor said it should be over 800 miles between regens unless it sits idle alot....
That service adviser has been eating too many magic brownies. Owners would kill to get 800mi between regens. Most see anywhere from 150-450 depending on use. Most I've ever had was just below 500, I'm usually in the 400mi range unless I'm towing or hauling something.
thanks for the replies ...senix- i definetely didnt miss the regen as i have been keeping a close eye on it.... my regens previously used to be around 400 miles or so.... today i noticed alot of blue smoke coming out of the tail pipe for a period of about 2 minutes... dont know what that is now???? so im going to bring the truck in next monday...(not this coming monday)... i will update u all once i get it into the dealer
A friend of mine has a 2008 6.4 and used to live so close to work you could see both the office and residence from either place. He had nothing but problems with the regens. 1 mile around the block, stop, start back up, 1 mile around the block the other way, stop, and repeat. Out went the DPF. Hes been problem free ever since, also has a 30-40 minute commute now though so that would be enough time to burn out a regen (my truck does, 6.7 though, in the same time frame most of the time).
I'm not advocating yanking the DPF, just relaying an observation. If it was my truck I wouldn't because I don't want to void the warranty and I don't drive in the same environment that will create the same problems.

I have the earlier flash and see the msg for the duration ,after reading the report on additives I switched to opti-lube from the ford cetane boost and on my 4th tank with it and the regens are now at every 400ish instead of 200. I have been driving a liitle more freeway miles with these last few tanks though so I'm sure that has helped.
So i noticed the truck go into regen today so i took it out on the highway to let it get hot....it no longer displays the exhaust cleaning for the duration of the process which must be a result of the new flash (i dont like that new feature at all) but i didnt see it say clean complete...the only way i knew it was done was by running the system check until it no longer said cleaning exhaust.....is this normal?....ford should definietly change it back to displaying the message the whole time!

Yes that is the new norm now. Most of us don't like it either. My banks IQ will show the cleaning exhaust filter message though so It is ok.
