I have a 1997 F-150 4.6L V-8 Auto trans w 120K miles. After driving at highway speeds for 15 minutes or so, it will not idle in gear when I come to a stop, and in fact dies. It will idle fine in neutral or park. It acts like it's trying to take off in 5th gear(if it was manual trans) and then dies. This does not happen with city-only driving. I took it to a mechanic who suggested that perhaps the idle control switch was going bad. I had it changed and it didn't help. Someone has suggested this is a torque converter clutch problem. Sounds expensive. Will this intermittent problem show up on the Ford dealer's code tester? Any guesses on repair costs? Thanks.
It sounds to me like your torque convertor clutch isn't unlocking. it would be similar to driving a standard and forgetting to push the clutch in when you came to a stop.
I think you're going to have to take it in and get it checked....preferably at a Ford dealer as they have testers made for your transmission.
They can scan the system and see if any codes show up especially for the Torque Convertor Clutch solenoid (TCC).
If the solenoid has failed electrically it should show up on the scanner. If not they will have to do more testing.
Hopefully it is something as simple as the TCC solenoid but it could be more involved like the torque convertor. As for prices I really have no idea. I just fix them..the office does up the bill
