Does any one know if the oil pan gasket is a pain in the as* to replace on a 89 Eddie Bauer, 5.8? Do i have to drop the tranny?
DO i have to take half the motor apart?
If i dont have the right tools and such, should i just take it to a mechanic?
the oil pan gasket is a major pain in the as*! I'm doing mine right now. You don't have to drop the tranny, but DO have to jack up the engine. It's a pain in the as* to say the least. I would suggest NOT getting the multi-piece gasket set. I did, and would not get it to sit right so that it wouldn't leak. I spent the $36 for the single piece set that came with 4 screw in pins that hold the gasket up and also hold the oilpan up while you put a few bolts in place. Then you unscrew the plastic pins from the 4 corners and finish bolting the pan up. Easy as pie! I'd say it was definitely worth the extra money.

i say exactly what i said in my post to you inthe oil sending unit thread. it su**s big time but 7 hours later and $32 dollars later i still have the $400.00 labor dollars in my pocket. Do you live in new jersey?
A bit of advice - if you are going to go through all the trouble of putting a new oil pan gasket in your truck, I would go ahead and replace the oil pump at the same time. You are already there as far as the labor goes and oil pumps are not that expensive. Even though you may already have good oil pressure, it sure wouldn't hurt to do it while you have the pan off.
BroncoGuy84 is 100% right there...replace the oil pump while you are at it. It's going to be a pain...but I would also take the pickup tube off and clean it out real good...you would not believe what mine had in it...old gasket pieces all inside it. I was cleaning it out for about 10 minutes...gee why did I not have any oil pressure??
The oil pump is a good investment of your time if you are doing all the work to change the pump.
I have the 351w on my 89 and I found that it was easier to drop the oil pump shaft by removing the distributor.
I dont have an engine hoist , what is the next best way to get the engine up out of the way to remove the oil pan, also how high would i need to go to get the pan out. I might be able to get a cherry picker if i have no other options.
I just jacked my engine up with a floor jack - I had an oil pump go out at the sand dunes and blmracing and I replaced my oil pump on my flatbed trailer with hardly any tools and a floor jack. Yeah, it was no fun, but we did it.
I used a floor jack (with wood blocking to discipate the load evenly. I placed the jack directly under the oil pan and carefully jacked up the motor. Worked fine for me. I didn't even remove the exhaust or transmission lines. Just watch how much flex you are causing on the lines.
I got the pump and pickup screen out with minimal trouble. It's still a pain in the as*, but it's a lot better than the cost of a shop doing it.
