I tried this down in the 5.4 forum and no bites, maybe somebody up here can help, it would be much appreciated...
I just bought a used 2001 F250 xl long bed 2 wheel drive with a automatic and the 5.4. It has 118000 on the clock. I bought it just to haul stuff for our thrift shop, it was a old sherwin williams truck with the lift gate and headache rack.
My question is, when it shifts into overdrive it makes a low grinding like sound(kinda like when a tire rubs on the fender well). It only does it when going into overdrive and only for a split second, if I turn it off it never makes the noise. The tranny shifts real good with no slipping and the engine runs great. Anybody have this happen to theres? Or maybe have an idea to what it may be?
First off did you do a complete fluid flush (all 20 qts) and filter change? If so what did you find in the pan? If you haven’t performed a trans service do so. See if that fixes it? It could be your converter clutch is going south or the solenoid that feeds it hydraulic fluid is week or full of crud? Google around and see if it has a Converter and/or OD solenoid. Not sure what trans you have as I’m more familiar with the later Torque Shifts which have several, but I’m sure yours will have solenoids as well. If you know nothing about automatic transmissions I'd recommend take it to a reputable Trans shop for trouble shooting verses doing alot of parts changes for nothing.

Thanks for all the info sir, I will give the flush a shot and see where that gets me first.
