I would like to replace the speaker in my '66 and I believe the radio is original. I'm trying to restore as close to original as possible but in the case of the speaker, it's hidden enough that I would use anything. So with the original radio, what is the maximum watt speaker I can get? I don't see any markings on the original speaker that would indicate.
If it was mine, I would see about having it re-coned. Although, it is a standard size 5" x 7", 3 watt, 8 ohm speaker, as I recall, so you could just buy a new one for about $35., I believe.
It was a little difficult finding only a single speaker at most audio stores, Wally World, etc., since most are sold in pairs!
I bought a new one because my original speaker was flat-out missing.
Here's a link to the speaker source I used. The 5"x7" Oval ($39.95, about halfway down the page) is a perfect fit to the holes in the dash grille and @ 8 ohms is a correct match for the original radio. Cranks up plenty loud enough with the stock radio to hear easily with the windows down in traffic on the freeway.
Thanks 66 - I ordered that speaker and as you said, it fits perfectly and is plenty loud (for AM radio). Now all I need is an antennea so I can listen to more than static.
You're welcome. My stock antenna wouldn't pull in any stations. I swapped in a later one I had lying around & it works pretty good now. Looks a bit out of place, but at least now I have something to listen to.
Don't forget to tune in your antenna after hooking it up. There's an attenuating screw on the side of the radio to tweek in the reception.
