Lost my reverse gear without any warning. I also lost neutral and only have forward gears in my auto overdrive tranny. Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Let me give you the complete story. I took my Explorer in for a smog test and the tranny was working perfectly. The technician backed it out of the parking slot then drove it into the test bay. When they were finished testing it we had to push it out of the test bay. I have not had reverse ever since then and am wondering if this is a typical Explorer tranny problem or could the smog guys have possibly caused this problem. I would appreciate any further input you can provide.
Thanks for your reply and I totally agree with you. Had I saw what went on in the test bay that day perhaps this would be a dead issue.
However, I believe your experience far outweighs mine and I do appreciate your input. Looks like it's time to drop the pan and start investigating. I'll keep you up to date on my end and let you know about them forward clutches.
Take care and thanks again for your time and for sharing your knowledge.

yes, if it was me, I would drop the pan and look for any debris but also check that the external and internal shift linkage is properly connected.
Good luck.

Reason: typo
I've been delaying dropping the pan in hope of an easy cure, however, being as my fluid looks and smells like it's brand new combined with your linkage suggestion that should encourage me to open it up and see what there is to see. Thank you for your input and for your time Lazy K. I shall inform the FTE "family" with either the good or the bad news ASAP.
Thank you all at FTE for your input and for your valuable time.
