i was wondering how hard it would be to swap a dana 60 into an 76 f150 radius arms suspension, has anyone done it which what's the best donor truck so on and so forth
78 & 79 are the earliest good years for front D60s. The 80s and up are good to but you can get a little more turning radius from the 78/79s. The pre 78s have smaller axles w not more strength than a D44.
DAMN! Why couldn't I find any wedges like that when I did my conversion. I spent a couple days cutting 1/4" plate steel and fabricating wedges for my D60. Aside from those wedges, the only other thing needed is a piece of box tubing to fabricate the track bar mount. I did my conversion with a 79 D60. I had to raise the front shock mounts to clear the tie rod. Check out my gallery for some pics.
How can a guy tell if he has a dana 60 under a 78-79 1/2 ton? We got 2 of last fall (one was in the middle of being restored but the guy ran out of money in a divorce) and the are extremely good trucks.
We're talking about front axles and 1/2 tons never came with Dana 60s. But in anycase, I think you are talking about the rear axles which should be a Ford 9". As with all axles, check your BOM if unsure.
I couldn't remember if the 1/2 tons did or not. But my dad does have a 1/2 ton that has a dana 60 in the rear and it has the ford 5 bolt wheel pattern.
I've read that 78-79 Ford 60s are the best for radius-arm setups because they have a 32" (or so) leafpad-to-leafpad compared to the 86-97 Ford Dana 60 which has a 36"(or so) measurement. The older Dana gives you more room for the radius arms.
Speaking of Dana 60's anyone know where I can get my hands on one?? Shhh shhh a father's day present for my hubby...let me know I am in Washington state...
