I hear a clicking sound when I turn the key on, but that's all that happens. The starter will run when I put a jumper across the solenoid. The battery is new and the solenoid is new. Any help please!! Could the relay be bad? IF so could someone tell me or lead me to some instructions as to how to replace it and or where this stuff is located. I don't have an owners or repair manual. Thanks in advance.
Will the starter run if you jump from the large battery terminal on the starter relay(solenoid) to the small terminal marked "s" on the starter relay(solenoid)? I am assuming you jumped across both big terminals?
If jumping to the small terminal makes the starter turn, then the starter relay(solenoid) is ok. Here's a short run down of the circuit.
Power comes off the starter relay battery terminal with some smaller yellow wires. These yellow wires eventually make it to the ignition switch. Turn the key to start, and power from the yellow wires is directed to the neutral safety switch on the tranny, or the clutch switch by a red/lightblue wire. This red/light blue then continues on back out to the starter relay where it hooks to one of the small terminals and activates the relay.
I jumped to the small terminal on the solenoid and the starter worked so what else could be the problem? Would I still here a buzzing sound when the key is turned if the ignition switch is bad? or could it be something else?
If jumping from the battery terminal to the small relay terminal works, but the ignition switch doesn't, then it's definitely an ignition switch circuit problem. There are several wires & connectors involved, and so is the Neutral Safety Switch, but it's most likely the ignition switch that's bad. See how to replace it here.
Before you do that, though, try crushing the small terminal connector slightly (the one in the rubber "L" that slips on) so it grabs the terminal tighter.
I am having a similar problem, except my ignition seems stuck on, I have to disconnect the main power line from the battery then turn the key to the "run" position then touch the power line to the solinoid terminal if I leave it hooked up the starter continues to turn over, I wanted to take a look at the link you provided but it tells me it is unavailable can you repost it or offer any other info???
When the starter is cranking take the S wire off at relay[the small 90 degree connector].If it continues-BAD relay. If not probably bad ignition switch.
something else I noticed is that even if the key is in the "off" position the engine will still crank, but the engine won't actually fire until the key is in the "on" position, maybe the tumbler???
