Steering Rebuild
I removed and disassembled the steering column, steering shaft, steering gear and pitman arm. Sent the gear to be rebuilt by Redhead Steering in Seattle. One day turn around $299. Great customer service. I looked into having the column rebuilt...$400+ Instead I told myself "how hard can it be?" Not too hard really. I used a diagram, then just remembered what I did on reverse. Ordered new parts to replace the worn parts from LMC, and less than $200 later I have a basically new steering column setup. Tight and awesome steering...added a drop pitman to replace the stock pitman that the PO torqued at an angle to make up for the lift. Less bind and wear and tear over time for sure with the new correct setup!
Shoot me a note if you are driving a 78 or 79 with 1/3 steering wheel turn worth of sloppy play like I was and are looking for advice. While I'm no expert, I'm happy to do what I can and share my lessons learned!
