I was pleasantly surprised this weekend when I calculated my gas mileage on a weekend fishing trip in California's Sierra Nevada. I have a 2002 exteneded cab Ranger with the 4.0 and 5 speed auto trans. I kept the speed down to between 65 and 70 with the cruise control running. As the weather was mild, I did not run the air conditioner. On the way up to the mountains - 270 miles - I got a little better than 20 mpg. On the way back, it was not quite as good, as I was bucking a bit of wind. Still, it averaged about 19.5.
I am pretty amazed that it was that good. What do you guys normally get with a similar setup? Just wondering, because I was expecting more like 17-17.5.
Ron, that is excellent gas mileage, especially for an off-road package. Your engine must be purring like a kitten! I'm sure your driving habits have a lot to do with it, too. This recent thread about Ranger gas mileage might interest you:
Thanks Rockledge. I was trying to get the best mileage possible. I have found that anything over about 70 mph really starts to suck the gas down. I'm still learning this truck. It only has 4000 miles on it, so it's really just starting to get broken in a little. I ran the cruise control all the way up and back. And just before I left, I had the oil changed although it was not due.
I got the 4.0 5spd in the 4x config and get about the same as you did, but.........if ya put along on county roads at around 45mph and use 5th you get 23.something (a/c on and all). I've also found over the years that cruise can hurt mileage in hilly areas.
