2002 explorer timing chains

I will have the engine of my 2002 explorer with 105k out and on a stand tomorrow. Is there any thing other than obvious seals, oil pumps ect that I should do? I have read many posts in this forum and I think i got it. Bought the tools some time back for a friend so he could fix his daughters explorer (deal on craigslist) and i thought since i owned the tools I would never need them, so much for that idea. Started the ford up the other day and it made a racket. Parked it and started ordering parts. I was wondering how long this engine will last when the work is done. thanks for all the help and advice.

the rear chain guide was gone the balance shaft guides gone, the cams were pitted from sitting and it has a bent rod. piston comes into contact with counter balance. seems the chains were the least of my problems. Now I am looking for another engine.

yes I only had the car for about 8 months. Put it up on craigslist for parts but I am not in the junk yard buisiness so we will see how it goes. Found an engine on car part.com but dont really have the time to go get it. They are also picey not to mention the fact I will have to prob do the timing chains for 800 or 900 dollars. I bought the car for 1000, Cost 800 to get it running and now I may have to put another 2k in it? Not sure its worth it. Stick a junk yard motor in it and hope it makes it to the dealer to trade in and then have payments. I have to think about this one it is a real shame what they did with that engine. I have a ranger with a 4.0 ohv and it has over 300k on it and i would drive it anywhere.

If you can find a 2004 or later 4.0 V6 OHC engine, they only have one timing chain.

Sorry that is wrong all SOHC engines have at least 3 chains most have 4. What caused the bent rod? I would pull the head and replace the rod. Its a LOT cheaper than another engine. Rockauto .com has the timing chain kits for less than $400 and since you already have the tools it should be pretty easy to get back on the road.
