But I've read that the 460 is to powerful for Flowmaster? Is this true? Should I go with Magnaflow instead? If anybody has some personal experience, any help or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
if i was you id get headers into 24in glasspacks, should sound really mean, and get 18in long 4in diameter resonator tips for it with 3in dual pipes, should be seriously deep and a good power boost, dont have any experience with flowmaster and magnaflows but they were never my style
No, your 460 is not "too powerful" for that exhaust system. I am not a fan of anything related to Flowmaster, but that is my personal opinion. I also cringe at the $380+ price tag listed. Ouch!
The Bronco crowd has a section in their forum with different exhaust/truck/bronco sound clips, take a listen in there: Exhaust sound clips - FSB Forums
I have a Magnaflow 3" straight-through muffler that measures 24" long on my 1992 F350 w/5.8L engine. I finished it off with a Walker 3" tailpipe, p/n 45683. This combo has a nice throaty rumble without being too loud and ZERO drone. Please do not tell my Ford the tailpipe was designed to fit a Chevy........
The muffler ran about $85, the tailpipe $45 a few years ago. My exhaust is 3" from the y-pipe back so I did not need to use a reducer/expander to get the 3" pieces to fit. For the retail price Flowmaster wants for that catback system I paid a few dollars more for the stainless Bassani y-pipe and the rest of the pieces for a complete exhaust.
I like the flowmaster sound, but not the flowmaster price. Their stuff is good quality, but not enough that it's necessary to fork over that kind of money. I just got some Summit Street & Strip mufflers that sound identical to the flowmaster 40 series, and I got 2 for less than the price of 1 Flowmaster. If I were you, I would pick up some mufflers that you think sound good, and just have a shop put 3" or 4" exhaust on it. I would lean toward 3" because 4" sounds like a fart in a rain gutter. A shop should be a lot cheaper than ordering a kit.
I really like the tone and lack of drone with the Magnaflow I have on my 1992 F350 w/5.8L engine.
When I picked up my last 1993 Lightning it had Flowmasters on it. The entire trip from Detroit back to Illinois was a ballbuster due to the horrible drone those awful Flowmasters had.
Like anything else, it is personal taste. For me, no Flowmasters.......ever.
For those that want old school hot rod sound, get Dynomax bullet mufflers. The are basically a glasspack just better. They sound bad ***.
I'd run 2.5 inch true duals. There isn't much need to go larger. If significant engine mods are in the future 3 inch pipes might be something to think about. I wouldn't go any larger.

I agree with ya on the sound and interior noise being low. Sometimes I wish it was a tad louder though.
Well I would like gain, not just a change in noise... it's possible to get exhaust in pieces, right? Kinda like how you can buy PVC pipe in pieces. Basically build your own cat-back. Get a few strait pieces and a few bends and you should be good. Right?
