Ok so a few weeks ago I did a return line kit on my truck because it would start for a few seconds then die and act like it was out of fuel now it is doing it again no leaks under the hood so I checked my fuel line all the way back and found that the tank selector valve was a little wet could that be the hard start issue and if so would one off a gasser work or only diesel models?
when those valves fail, the most common failure is an internal leak, transferring fuel from one tank to the other. on an old gasser i had one that sucked in so much air at that point that the truck "ran out of gas" with a full tank.
i've never heard of one of these valves causing the air intrusion problem, and i would doubt it would, as the problem is usually a leak at the top of the system allowing fuel to siphon all the way down, whereas a leak at that valve wouldn't let air in up top to start a siphon.
on my van, there has always been a wet stripe covering that valve and everything else between the frame rails, it possibly came from an over lubed u-joint or a transmission rear seal. if you have a significant leak there, you'll notice the frame rail and everything around it washed clean.
more likely is a problem on the top of the system. i once had your same problem and found that one of the new o-rings had a little dimple on one side that allowed air in. also check for bad hose connections, or other possibilities
Some of the caps have a sharp edge on them it helps to get a piece of 600 grit sand paper and smooth out the inside of the cap and lube them well when you put them on, I use vasoline (vinerschlidër) you can get the good viton o rings from FTE member "typefour" also check the "olives" (the rubber compression fittings on the hard lines between the lift pump and fuel filter, fuel filter and IP, and the one at the back of the engine on the "y" fitting also can get those from "typefour". There is two orings in the fuel filter head where the fuel heater portrudes from the housing. The bio diesel that they put in the ulsdiesel will rot rubber lines so as time goes on all of your rubber fittings will need replacement. I have not heard of a selector valve leaking either and I would check those other things first .
