I bought a Stant thermostat yesterday for my new intake. I long ago got rid of the old intake and thermostat. I don't know what end of the thermostat goes towards the motor. In the past, the thermostats were marked with "to rad" on one side, this did not have the marking. A picture or diagram would be very helpful-Thanks
What engine is it? If a 302 0r 351W, which I suspect since you mentioned the intake, you may need a self-adhesived gasket. Some of thermostat housings don't have a positive way to keep the 'stat in when you turn it to put it on, and the 'stat falls out w/o the gasket stuck to it. Don't put any sealer on the housing if you are using that kind of gasket as the adhesive won't stick to it.
LOL, the 300 uses the same type of housing and gasket, but bolts onto the front of the head. No idea why Ford designed their engines with the t-stat sitting vertical. The 351M/400 is the only one that I can think of that has a horizontal t-stat.......
If your question is "which end goes toward the engine?"...here is a simple picture.
The side with the sprng and the "bulb" in the middle is the part of the thermostat that senses the coolant temperature. So you want that facing the enginge since this is the coolant you are wanting to control the temperature of. Hope this helps

There is always one smarty-pants that has a surgically-clean engine, so clean that he wears surgical gloves to keep his hands off it, and goes around taking pictures of everything.

hey now...those gloves and engine belong to Google!!!
Wouldn't surprise me. I haven't worked on a 429/460 in years, and have never owned one, so I couldn't remember.
Might be others too, but not that were available in these trucks, with the possible exception of the 3.8L V6. Haven't messed with one of those, ever........
Thanks for the help! I thought the spring side went to the motor but wanted to check to be sure. Its been years (20+) since I messed with a thermostat and they use to stamp on the thermostat "to rad" on the arrow side. I guess it cost manufacturer too much to do this or include a diagram or picture on the carton or a piece of paper in the package. I did see they (Stant) did have a diagram on their web-page-ain't this computer age great...................................
