Redhead steering

Finally got it and what a huge difference it made. No more steering wander and now is a pleasure to drive of the freeway. That pitman arm was a pain to get out but other than that was a easy process. Next of to get alignment. I couldn't have done without you guys. Thanks to all.

Nice. It's on my list as well. Did you just go exchange it in person, or mail? What's the process? How much$?

I have to agree - did mine about 3 weeks ago and LOVE it. My 4" drop pittman was wobbled out so I put on a new arm as well.

It was about $350 as I recall ... just call or email here : Steering Gears | Steering Gearbox | Rack and Pinion | Red-Head Steering Gears, Inc.

Group Buy

Every so often someone arranges a group buy for the redheads with a discount. Someone contacts them to arrange a discount for a certain number ordered(paid for).
A Redhead search will find some previous ones I'm sure.

I live in Bothell and drove in. It was 550 without the core. Bring the core in today to get 175 back. They gave a tour of the the shop and saw how they rebuild them. There's plenty of steering box for our truck sitting on their shelves

I am interested in getting in on a group buy.

Do they change the steering ratio, what did you learn on your tour of the shop, did they show you what they do to tighten up the steering??

Where did you guys get your new pitman arm?

I used the stock pitman arm. I'm still sore from the battle I had trying to remove the pitman arm. The shop showed me which part they replace in the steering box. Not sure what it's called but it's the part the wears out on stock units. Ball bearings are used somewhere in the process. Bottom line they say is that this steering box will last three times longer than stock

One the guys that work there asked me when I returned the core what the difference was. I noticed right away the steering is tight. Freeway driving is straight and when it starts to wander the correction is very responsive. Wander caused by other factors not from the truck. I believe with a worn out box that when you try to correct the steering there is a delay and once it starts to respond, it's over corrected. Thats my experience anyway.

These guys are awesome. I did mine late last year and got in on a group buy. It was a nice and easy to get set up. I think they only wanted 3 people to buy in order to get the discount. Also, someone mentioned changing the ratio in the steering. They will do that. I actually asked that question when I got mine as I need a new box for my jeep and want a different ratio. They said they can do all of that. you just have to tell them what you want. I can't say enough good things about Red Head. Great product and good company.

I put an Azone reman on my '89 150 last year. I've since replaced everything from tires to the rag joint. Still wanders a bit. Tie rods, ball joints, shocks and even put a steering damper on it. Nadda, still loose. Everything I change makes it "better", but still not right. For a stock truck, it shouldn't drive like this.

I can grab the input shaft of box and it "clanks" around. Don't think it should do that?? I'm thinking that is where my wandering is coming from. If the input shaft can walk around, then it can leave slop in the gears, thus making it feel loose.

I'm going to contact Redhead and see what I can do.
