I am new to older vehicles (03 Subaru WRX for the last 6 years) and just got my 79 F100. I know it has a V8, but I don't know which one so I can get the parts for a tune up (that I'm sure it needs). I have read a lot on here and many other places in the internet, including my Chilton's book, but I can't find out what engine I have. The plate with the engine code isn't on there anymore. Any discerning characteristics that will point one V8 out against another?
Count the valve cover bolts.
5 bolts = FE (360/390) Doubtful it's this, last used in '76 models
6 bolts = 302
7 bolts = 460
8 bolts = 351M, 400
BTW welcome to FTE
This is assuming that it's the original engine. A lot can happen in 30+ years.
Thanks for the quick reply. How can I tell if it's a 351M or 400? Are the part numbers for spark plugs and things the same?
From what I heard the only real difference between them is the internal parts (crankshaft & maybe the connecting rods ?) of the 351M & 400. I'd go out on the limb & say that the spark plugs are the same. But, I can be wrong so don't quote me.

Yes, the 351m and 400 are exactly the same except for the rods and pistons. The belt, spark plugs, oil filter, amount of oil, air cleaner will all be the same.
That being said, that looks like a recent rebuilt engine, so you will probably only need to change the oil. Take the spark plugs out and inspect them before buying new ones.
Thanks for all the advice and kind words. I'll probably do that this weekend. The plug wires look really good, so I figure you're right about the plugs. I know the oil needs to be changed. I started researching oil on here yesterday, but I probably have a few more days reading to do before I settle on one. It's looking like 10W40 right now, but not sure what brand.

Only difference really is displacement, 400 is 6.6l and 351m is 5.8l, originally there would be a engine data sticker on the drivers valve cover. I would just run normal 10w30 maybe a high mileage blend, never heard of these trucks using 10w40
That looks kind of narrow to be a 351/400m.Those engines have the thermostat going into the block instead of the intake manifold. It's hard to see in the pictures. If the thermostat is in the intake then I say 302.
