I hope someone can give me a anwser to my problem! I have a 1997 Ford F150 manual 4wd shift on the floor, and its a manual 5 speed overdrive. Once in a while it will make a horrible grinding or roaring sound and it feels as if its draging or being held back. The 4x4 light will come on, once I come to a stop it will stop roaring and will drive fine again, the 4x4 light stays on. It doesnt seem to matter what seed Im going when it does this, because it has done it in lower gears as well as highway speeds. The 4x4 light stays on the majority of the time, its when it goes off that shortly after it starts roaring. Ive changed the fluid in the transfer case as well as the transmission, my next step is to change the fluid in the front and rear differentials. I hope this will fix it, but not very optimistic.
Forget about the fluids at this point.
Find out why the 4wd dash light it on.
The light is not from any fluids cause unless something went dry and wore out..
You do know that in 4x4H the transfer case does an internal shift to engage the front axle. This can be a source of the noise.
Well I noticed to day for some unknown reason my dash (4x4) light kept clicking on and off, clicking ' cause that's what I heard ad the light went on and off...anyway while I was driving I shifted to to 4h and the roar stopped, as well as pushing in clutch, ****ing wierd! But since then all is well...:/
