I have a 97 F350 4X4 single axel with 7.3. I just bought a 36' fifth wheel that weights 12,000 lbs. I am looking to upgrade to a newer model dually and want to stay with Ford. Which diesel is worthy of buying between 6.0, 6.4, and the 6.7? Any info would be helpful.
Well that is a broad question. They all have there problems but people also have had good luck with them to. Depends on how much you want to spend and how loaded you want it. 6.0 motor got better mileage then the 6.4. But the new 6.7 has also gotten good reviews for mileage. Price is the key.
I would go with the 6.7 myself. Like what was stated it is a broad question. The 45 to 60k you will put into a new truck, you could put a fraction into your old one and end up with just as a reliable truck... Just a thought
i know that my trusk is a good one but I would like to have a little more stability in the rear-end. I also had an issue on our last camping trip. We were in Bastrop Texas traveling hwy. 71 up and down the hills when my truck, while going uphill, lost power for a split second. I am not sure why this happened but thought that having 230,000 miles on it may have had something to do with it.
ok well what i was saying... finding a compatible DRW axel, a used dually bed to cover it, a remaned motor with a warentee and a new pait job thrown in for gp will be a hell of a lot cheaper than a new truck, Any of which can at any moment have a $10,000 failure that you can be held liable for. Even with the new 6.7 under warentee I have seen reports of this.
I stand by my suggestion
I have seriously thought about doing this because my truck is very clean and well maintained. I bought it new back in 97 and swore that I would never pay that much money for another truck again!

thank you for your input.
You will pay double now what you paid for that truck back in 97. If you have the means to do so do what was sugested above. The only thing you have going for you now is doesel fuel is near 4.50 depending on where you live. The wife and I have tossed around your scenario as well, my truck is an 06 paid for with 67k on it. We are looking into a 5th wheel and I would love the stability of a dually, however at around 60k...not gonna happen.
I may do the exact same thing, swap in a dually rear, find a set of dually fender to graph into my sort bed and add the hub extenders up front. Me and the 06 are gonna spend a long time together.
And if it were me Im not sure I would go newer than an 07, although I would look at a 2010 with a 6.4 and delete the DPF and tune it but I dont have that much money to do that either.
I have to agree the price of these trucks are getting out of hand, especialy with the price of diesel. I started looking today for salvage yards that carry the DRW parts that I am looking for and it looks like I could make this happen for less than 5,000. Sure sounds better than 40,000! I would have to admit it would be hard to get rid of my 97! I wonder if the prices for these trucks will ever crash like the housing market did!!!
As the price of diesel fuel goes up the price of these trucks will go down, but then again so will the value of your trade as well.
The dealer I bought my 06 from calls me constantly trying to get me trade up to a 2012. But at 58k, I need to get about 48k for my truck, they just wont give me that much and I refuse to pay for a truck that spends 5 of the 7 days a week sitting in a garage.
Post some pictures of that 97 I love the look of those trucks.
