FE Crankshaft Question

I found out today that the crankshaft that had a manual transmission on it is not the same a crankshaft for an automatic. The difference being a place for the torque converter. I've got a 360 (manual transmission) and I'm trying to put a C6 on it, what is the best way to go about doing that? Is there something you can do to the crank or do I have to get an automatic crank?

The C6 came off a 390 that needs to the machine shop. So I'm thinking that I could out that crank into the 360, then change connecting rods. Or hunt for a 360 crank for an automatic. What do people think? Thanks in advance.

crankshafts have nothing to do with weather it an auto or manual, manuals have a flywheel, were autos have a flexplate

There is a pilot bushing/bearing that goes in the back end of the crankshaft for a manual trans, the input shaft rides inside it. This has to be removed for use with an auto trans, as the pilot of the convertor has to fit into the end of the crank.
Remove the bushing/bearing, and the convertor should then fit.

2x... and don't forget to remove the pilot bushing at the rear end of the crank when swapping from manual to automatic.

How do you remove the pilot bushing, without a slide hammer?

Ya pack it solid with grease and then use a tool (like a piece of steel rod) which fits snugly into the center of the bushing/bearing. Then strike it with a hammer. The compressive action of the rod on the packed grease will hopefully create enough hydraulic pressure to push out the bushing/bearing.

Btw, wear eye protection and place a rag over it or else you'll have new garage-only clothing.
