Turbo mounting bolt question

I am preparing to remove my turbo to clean it and noticed that the passenger side mounting bolt is broken off. Can anyone tell me if the bolt threads into just the pedestal or does it thread into the turbo housing and the pedestal meaning I'll have to drill/tap etc. My hope is that once I remove the other two bolts I'll be able to maneuver the turbo out and address the broken bolt. Thank you in advance for any advice, etc.

I would love to set up a poll of some sort, these passenger side turbo mount bolts are either finger tight, or broken, the cab side is fine as well as the driver side, wonder if it has something to do with the direction of rotation of the turbo and the torquing of the housing. When I replaced mine the passenger side was loose.

To the op, IMHO use PB blaster on any rusted bolts about an hour prior to removal, they almost back themselves out

Pb blaster, drill small hole in broken bolt, use an easy out, then you just have to clean up the threads. A good soak before drilling and easy out is the key, even if you soak it two or three times, it will save you in thte long run.

Thanks everyone. I've got a can of PB at the ready. So if I understand correctly, the turbo is not coming out until I drill and remove that bolt. That is, the bolt threads into the pedestal and housing both? Its hard to tell as its broken off about flush. On my way to get some easy outs and more PB blaster.

IIRC No, housing has no threads, just the pedestal. It should come off prior to easy out work depending on where it broke, the turbo needs some persuasion to get loose the exhaust up pipes and down pipe will keep it in place, Plus the oil drain tube it is sitting on. use a pry bar to break it free, place pry bar under turbo near oil drain tube and gently pry up off oil drain tube

Putting the turbo back in place with no leaks is a little tricky, the best method I have found is to take off the passenger side wheel well cover, loosen the up pipe to passenger exhaust manifold bolts but don't remove completely, then this will give you the play needed in the turbo to uppipe connection you need then tighten the up pipe to turbo bolts to torque IIRC it is like 12ftlbs then tighten the exhaust manifold to uppipe bolts. If there is even the slightest air gap between the turbo to uppipe connection it will leak, and you will have lower boost and smell exhaust in the cab. Good luck

Oh btw, once the turbo is out, only 4 bolts I think 13mm hold the pedestal down to the block, would make it much easier to work on out of the truck

why am I thinking opposite of everyone being that the bolt goes threrw the pedistal and threads into the Turbo Housing itself

as in NO THREADS in the pedistall only threads in the turbo housing

Maybe Im just on planet Benny I just Do NOT remember any threads in pedistall

You might have to take a Bar and pop it out of the pedistall depending where the Bolt broke at

Damn! Because planet benny is where the knowledge is! Your right. I just had to go look at my spare turbo and it is threaded, I was going off memory and thinking the opposite. Thanks for catching that, I really hate spreading mis information

I read this thread this morning and thought there are no threads in the turbo pedistall. And then thought Maybe I was thinking wrong since everyone said the turbo Pedistall was threaded.

And for some reason it just bugged me. The more I thought about it theres just no way that Pedistall was threaded.

the turbo pedistall cant be threaded the bolt would more than likely acheive torq on the Turbo pedistall before it pull the Turbo tight to the mount

Raptor Im Glad you had that turbo to check cuz I was just about ready to go pull a bolt out and check it out
