ZF ?'s

I'm looking at buying a parts truck for the ZF swap. If everything goes as planned I should have the truck by next weekend. However, this thing has north of 300k and I wont know how well the trans shifts until I can drive it. So excluding anything major, how expensive and hard are these ZF's to rebuild?

If this works out, I'll have all kinds of goodies for you guys to haggle over!

IIRC You can rebuild it for around 4-500

Thanks Mike.

Are the ZF's 1356's or 4407's. Or did they interchange them?

Both the 1356 and the 4407 will bolt up to the ZF. Is your parts truck also a crw cab, and what t-case does it have in it?

That's good that it's the same wheel base truck as yours, the drive shafts will all work. The problem we ran into doing Tyler's swap was his truck had a 4407 t-case and the donor truck had a 1356. He wanted to keep the 4407 in his truck so we changed the ends on the rear drive shafts that connect to the t-case. The 4407 uses a 4-bolt flange type and the 1356 uses a slip yoke. Using the rear drive shaft from the donor truck with the flange style yoke end, it came up about an 1" short. So we changed the ends of the drive shafts back and put the 1356 in it and I'm gonna get a buddy that owns a machine shop to make me a 1 1/8" spacer to connect it.
Both trucks were ext. cab long beds but I guess there is a difference in the front half of the rear drive shafts. If we could find a rear drive shaft from a ECLB truck that had the ZF and 4407 t-case we'd be in bussiness.

That's actually the thread that made me think of this.

With the 300k+ on the donor and 180k on mine, plus I know most of the history on my truck, I'd prefer to keep my current 4407.

If your donor is a '96 or '97 it may have the 4407 in it, I'm not saying it will that's just a maybe. It would be sweet if it does!

It's a 97.

Trying to explain to the woman that this will actually save us money is turning into an exercise in futility.

There are a few variables that need ironed out, but the thought of a ZF has me rather excited. My E4OD is fine....for now. It's only a matter of time, 2 to 3 doesn't want to grab if you're WOT. A ZF is perfect for the amount of towing I do and the HP I want in the future.

That's what I like to hear.

I'm just trying to see the cost/how difficult it is if in fact it does need rebuilt.

Doesn't look to be to bad. Had the one I grenaded apart and was fairly easy to get apart. I think the service manual I have has alot of info but its for a 94 s42 not the s47 as there are a few slight differences but it should be very close.

Sometimes it's hard to make the ladies understand !! LOL!

I definately like the ZF better than the E4OD. Especially doing a lot of towing. The only down side to them is in town stop and go traffic! I've got bad knees! LOL!
