Well the rest of this week I'm up in the mountains for military training. This afternoon I started to truck up to get ready to head to the hotel. She started up great, started down the mountain, used the tow haul while going down hill so i wouldn't have to use the breaks as much. When I got to the area were it was mostly smooth and flat and at the stop sign turned the tow haul off.
Well drove for awhile, hit a little bit of a hill, of course my turbo has some sticking vains so I blew a little black smoke (turbo will hopefully be cleaned out soon). Got to another stop sign almost to the hotel and took my foot off the break and she started to studder, looked out the mirror and saw white smoke (I'm cussing at this point), let off the gas let it settle and stoped the truck, then I slowly put my foot on the gas and she ran perfect.
Checked on my CTS for any codes and right now I have the P0299, P0404 and P0405, I know the 404 and 405 are EGR valve issues, and plan on putting a new EGR valve on soon, I also know the 299 is the turbo.
I got to the hotel kept it running and checked the coolent level and any leaks and I saw perfect level in the degass bottle and no leaks around, currently I'm letting it sit for a little while and I'll be checking for any leaks.
Hopefully within the next few weeks I'll be putting a new BPD EGR cooler and new oil cooler and either clean the turbo or get one from Riffraff Diesel: Garrett PowerMax GT3788VA Turbo 04-07 this way I'll have a spare turbo and all.
In everyones idea should I risk running the truck any more since I've seen the quick white smoke and small jerking or continue to monitor and leaks and such.
I've read the 404 and 405 together is pretty much for sure a crapped out EGR valve but have you been through any water lately? I had both these codes and part throttle/light throttle miss fire after plowing through some fairly deep water at about 35mph. CEL on after just a couple of miles. Pulled the plug on the EGR and sprayed the valve and plug out with WD-40 and check engine light was out when I cranked back up. No issues since.
White smoke can be coolant or rich fuel mixture. I would keep an eye in it and try to get a smell of the smoke if you can. Are you adding coolant or are MPG's down? Temps normal on the CTS?
Well as far as my valve, I just soaked it and cleaned it off about 3 weeks ago. Installed new gaskets on the valve. The only water that has been around is the rain we had the last few days, but nothing enough to screw things up.
Well currently I'm in the mountains so I would probably figure the MPG would go down a little since going up hill and sometimes steep hills. I haven't had to add any coolent to the bottle. Currently running around 188 to 190 on ECT and around 205 to 215 on EOT. I now in the near future I'm going to have to replace the EGR cooler and oil cooler.
to the OP, if u get a white smoke thing next time u start her up, smell the white smoke. if it smells like coolant, then u probably got a blown oil cooler or blown egr cooler. either way, jus change both and ur good.
u might also wan to check ur egr valve right after driving, park wif nose facing on the down plane, pop egr valve out. if the valve or anything inside the egr valve housing is wet or seems moist, then u know u got a busted egr cooler.
ur temps seem ok but i would still monitor closely, cos ur hitting about average of 10 to 15 degrees. normally, if everything is clean, i.e. entire cooling system is flushed clean, ur temps should be about 6 to 9 degrees without load.
Well, if it were mine i wouldn't park it just yet, being away from home and with the turbo under boosting at least. I'd keep an eagle eye on the gauges, and rear view mirror, and the coolant level and new white residue on the de-gas bottle, and as Snuggy said ,try and get a sniff of that exhaust if it starts smoking again. Temp spread is gettin up there for sure (I'm not too far behind you with my temps). I would also listen closely for anything odd at start-up after sitting for a few hours or overnight. If the white smoke IS fuel it could be an injector(s), if it is an injector it could drool fuel into the cylinder after shut down and cause more trouble. Don't mean to worry ya, just trying to help you stay on top of it . Good Luck!
I checked everything this morning and all was good, started up no problem. Currently what I'm doing to keep from having to much problems, I'll put the truck in 3rd gear and currently the truck can handle the mountain. I might see a puff or two of black smoke if I really hit the turbo. Currently I'm holding around 12* but once I head home I'll see the deltas go up.
Hopefully soon I'll also get the EGT probe for my CTS, hopefully next month, and hopefully in the next few months get new coolers and everything for cooler changes.
