What would be the best way to swap a 460 into a 96 bronco. I have a 89 f350 with a 460 and zf5spd I would like to swap into the bronco. I dont think I will have any trouble with the tranny but im unsure bout the best way to get a 460 run. It doesnt have to be fords fuel injection im open to all ideas carb and aftermarket efi. Thanks for any help.
Is the F350 transmission a 4x4 version? If not it is a lot more difficult swap. The '89 460 would also be run by an OBD-I engine control system, The 1996 Bronco is running OBD-II. To stay EFI would be difficult to say the least. In your favor there is a lot more aftermarket support for OBD-II tuners.
What trans does the bronco have now. I'm assuming 4r70 which makes it tough.
If you had e4od you could find one of those to use instead and then it would all be easy.
So I'd say buy the pedals for the 96. I don't think the under dash structure is the same for an easy swap from the 89 to the 96.
Personally I'd use all the smallblock wiring on the 460. It don't use a crank trigger I don't think, so you can use the 460 distributor. But I'm not sure about the trucks.
If the current engine still has a distributor then go with what I said.
You can either get a new maf that's "calibrated" for 24lb injectors or what I suggest is that you go and get a custom tune for the truck. Also, the custom tune will get rid of the cel for it missing the auto trans.
New driveshaft most likely and your done.
I'd just buy the engine conversion mounts and bolt it all in.
L&L makes a sweet set of headers, and probably the banks headers will also fit. Or use the stock exhaust. Up to you.
The folks over on FullSize Bronco have a wealth of info about 460 swaps. But I am not aware if any have been done using an OBD-II vehicle. All the physical pieces should be relatively easy. It's getting the existing PCM happy with running the 460.
Like I said before getting your own tuner or having someone else create a tune for the truck should be straight forward as well. There is a lot more support for OBD-II.
Thanks for all the help. That would be sweet if it is possible to use the 5.8 wiring. The bronco did have a e4od, but I really want to put the standard in. I already have a set doug thorley headers that I had in the truck. As far as the distributer troubles your talking about what do I need to look for? Is any of the connectors on the 5.8 wiring going to match the 7.5? As far as programming there is a local performance shop within ten mins that could do that. Thank you
I'm assuming that your bronco still has a distributor like the 7.5.
Not distributorless and have two coil packs like an explorer 5liter does.
The manual trans is your preference. I just think the under dash structure is different between the 89 and 96. But look. It may work.
It's a simple system to swap out. It's all hooked together and the firewall may have the knockout already.
If not then buy the reinforcing plate for the clutch and then your hole pattern is already there, and pop some holes and your done.
The wiring is close enough. The 302 usually has a knock sensor. The 7.5 has a different firing order... So you gotta put the plug wires in the right order for the 7.5 and then move your injector wires to the correct place also. That's really it. Smog and egr stuff is possibly in different locations but should all be compatible.
The Bronco or F-series for that matter did not go distributorless until the mod-motors came along, which by that time the Bronco was gone. I would think the OP may need to swap the existing distributor because it most likely has the TFI mounted to it. I do not recall when Ford switched to the remote mount TFI like the truck already has. If the '89 engine is already a remote mount TFI distributor then it should be plug and play.
The 5.8L engine also uses a "mis-fire" detector mounted near the harmonic balancer. The balancer itself has a reluctor pressed on it. I am not aware the 7.5L ever used one. That may possibly be shut off with a custom tune.
Alright thank you. You guys are so much help. As far as distributers the 7.5 has the tfi mounted to it im pretty sure. And the pedals are different from the 89 to the 96. But i should be able to get that stuff from junkyard. i have been off this project for a lil while doin research and getting some things together I will defintley keep you posted as it goes and asking questions im sure. Thank you again.
Find a 95 distributor for the 7.5. That has a relocated tfi like your bronco. Then you're all set to plug in and go. I'm sure other years also, I just know 95 has it relocated.
Alright Ive already got a distributer from the the 302 we pulled out of the f150 we put my bronco moter in. So Im set with that. Its lookin good all starting to come together. This project is technicly building a bronco im in process of swapping the dana 60 and 10.25 in. Then motor and tranny Ive been takin bunch of pics and stuff of all this I want to show and post some here, but do I need to do it in bronco section because I posted my first post there and got no response you guys have been alot of help. I would rather do it here.
