I have a 97 f 150 ext. cab 4x4 with the 4.6L.The truck has 40 thousand miles on it and is immaculate condition, the only problem is that it seems to be a gutless wonder. Is there any cheap performance upgrades/secrets for this engine. Dual exhaust and a chip of some sort are already on the way. Is there any way to open up the factory air filter/intake piping on these trucks. i've heard people talking about it but none of them go into great detail on how to do it. I've also heard that switching to a cooler thermostat will also increase power. Is this true? Does polishing any of the intake components(ie. throttle body) net any real gain. Has anybody used that thing(can't remember what its called) that swirls air in the intake. Thanks.
A 70mm throttle body spacer will do wonders, some shorty headers with that new exhaust,k&n air filter package. All this together would be impressive performance. Try looking at www.fordracing.com you might get some good ideas? By the sounds of it your heading the right direction.
One other thing, that Tornado air flow is a waste of time. I would love as much as you to gain power cheaply, but, power doesn't come cheap. You need to add this and that blah, blah, blah. Your gonna have to spend a little to see a noticable differance. Best of luck, if you succeed in doing it cheaply give me a ring,ha ha ha.
I had a 4.6 in my Grand Marquis and I was doing some work under the hood and I had to remove the air filter box to throttle body hose. Anyway I had to move it out of the way and I started it up and it sounds a lot meaner without that hose. Maybe you could bet a K&N cone air filter and some hose clamps and put a open element filter right on the front of throttlebody. I had a open filter on a bunch of carbureted trucks and they ran fine. You'll find yourself cleaning that filter a lot because it's visible. Anyway I'm just spitballin and throwing some stuff out.
