Hey guys my bronco is a 92 with the 5.0 and she's got 167,000 on her and is still running pretty well. I've been thinking about getting a newer truck because the power of the newer engines are awesome, but i love my truck and have already done a lot. So heres a question, I'm thinking of rebuilding my engine on some type of budget. My ideas are to stroke it to a 331, have the heads ported/polished/multi angle valve job with some larger valves, a cam from comp cams or the like that would go well with the set up. I'd also grab some headers from summit, not long tube because i need to retain the emissions here in Mass. With this type of set up will i need to get the mass air system or could i get a chip burned for it. Also what kind of numbers/performance will i have. Do you think i could keep up with a 5.9 Dodge or some of the newer trucks out there. My dad had a 97 Ram 5.9 and i love the power it has and is what i'm aiming for. LASTLY, lol, how much do you think this type of setup would cost. PHEWWW, thanks for the responses in advance!
The truck in my sig is speed density and runs great. It is not a stroker tho. I'm confident that you can get a chip burned with for the stroker tho. If I mat my truck in first gear cruising at 20 MPH the tires will cut loose and smoke RIGHT now. I'm sure with the right components your dad ain't gonna have a chance.
with thaty many miles, you should probably grab a 351W from a boneyard, and build that baby up. Trust me, a late model Dodge has nothing on a well-built 351. You can build one loaded with aftermarket parts, breathing dependable fire for less than $3,000 that will be a serious force. It is possible to build a 302 that can perform like a mild 351W, but it will cost a lot more money. I wouldn't recommend doing serious mods on anything with over 100,000 miles, even if it's running well. The bottom line is, for cheap power, cubic inches is the way to go over spending cubic dollars. TK
I have to agree 100% with TorqueKing. No replacement for displacement. Keep the stock integrity of the 351 (by that I mean no bore and stroke job), and just bolt on.
could i buy a short block 351 and have my heads ported/polished etc. and also get a cam thrown in it, would this make the swap easier? I've looked around and have found that if i swap a complete engine i'll need a new oil pan, intake, and exhaust manifolds (i'll be getting shorties anyway) so i figured just using a short block would eliminate the new intake dilema. Has anyone completed this or know of a website? Thanks for the responses!
A short block won't come with the intake and with the longer stroke the block of the 351w is taller/wider so your lower section off the 5.0 won't fit.
Just a heads up.
