I am getting the parts together to swap a ZF-5 speed into my 86 F-250 4x4 460. I found a trans. but the guy who has it doesn't know what motor it came off of. What would I need to look for to ensure that I get one for a 460. Are there specific part numbers to look for? Thanks in advance to those who might help.
Man I dont know about the part numbers winemaker. I do know they had at least 3 different bell housing patterns. The small block, big block and diesel. Gary Lewis bought one for the big block configuration. If nothing else maybe you could measure the bolt pattern on the bell housing if Gary would be kind enough to take some measurements and post them up. Number Dummy might have the part number info you need as well.
Here are the numbers from diesel ZF5:
model:S 5-47
ZF parts list number:1317 050 004
Tranasmission serial number: 8084206
Ford part number: F6TA-7003-PA
Total Ratio: 5.08-0.77
Maybe if Gary can post his numbers we can do a comparison to see if the numbers on the case have any significance.
You can't measure the top two bolts spacing and determine if it's a diesel or a 460 trans, they are pretty much the same between the two. The ones down the sides are different though.
