Wiring Paths
Wiring Paths
Does anyone out there have semi-original wiring on their truck? I could use some pictures of where the wire actually runs under the hood from the firewall out to the generator or alternator. You know, where it's clipped to the frame or firewall or inner fender perhaps? Possibly the harness back to the rear lights would help too. Mine had no taillights or wiring to the back. My truck had some wiring run in a dozen different directions and I'm trying to make it "pretty".
Any help would be appreciated.

lee, i don't know if this helps, but , i have a few pics in my gallery showing this harness under hood---1.5 tonner--basically the same as far as harness goes. taillites run along inside left frame rail. hope it helps
Thanks, that does help. I was wondering about the front lights and where the wire ran. It looked too "open" under the fenders. I thought something was missing on my truck! Speaking of which, was there some cover or other on the dimmer switch? Mine is open to the elements right now and that doesn't look "right" to me.
I got the wire to the (future) tail lights running along the frame rail and that looked right. Now I have to figure out where the rear lights mount so I can finish that part. Then, to ohm everything out before I hook the battery back up. No fuses or fusable links makes me nervous. I'm going to have a friend help me ohm it out so he can double check my work. Another set of eyes (especially 25 years younger eyes) never hurt.

on these old dogs, the dimmer was in the elements. that would be correct. i took the time to install a fuse panel under dash for protection. unless you are doing a concourse resto, you might consider this option for peace of mind.
Did you replace the Circuit Breaker with the fuse block or augment it? What about turn signal? Front looks easy due to the parking lights but the tail lights? Or are there enough bulbs in the light for tail, brake and turn? With only 2 wires running into it, I wouldn't think there was more than one bulb (dual filament). I'm not going for concourse but I don't want to have any extra lights hanging off the back either. Any guidance that way? Anyone?

I know the wiring runs to the rear on the inside of the driver frame rail if im not mistaken.
Im not sure about factory clippings on the firewall. I plan to make my own mounts as I start to wire everything up. Are you trying to dress the engine bay as original as possible?

I'd like to keep it as close as possible. I'm looking into a fuse block for under the dash to see what I can do there. It will be out of sight and I can add in things like an electric fan.
I'd rather not have a bunch of "extra" wire hanging off anywhere.

no circuit breaker, just fuse panel. there will be some extra wiring, after all, it's not totally original---(electric fan,etc.). two filiment bulbs work fine. you only require one bulb on each corner. everything on my truck from nose to back of cab is oem wiring-except dash lites. i created a new harness to meet my needs under dash. out of sight, out of mind, yet neatly done. for rear of truck, i ran a 7 wire harness to a junction box, then split off in both directions for lights and trailer plug. everything is 12 volt with generator for juice---works fine with no issues powering trailer. once you know everything that will be in truck, take the time to draw on paper what you need to wire---in other words, create the harness you need for you---then make it happen. remember your grounding wires---bat to block--block to cab--block to frame. lots of folks screw up here, not having the proper ground!
The wiring mess continues:

So far, so good. Waiting on tail lights and some other things that escape me at the moment. I'm trying to figure out how much fuse block to get. Then again, more is always better!

The truck is the color I got it. I have no idea what shade of green that is but I like it. I have all the diagrams I think I need right now. Time to look up a fuse block and then figure out how to not butcher the thing to make it look "right".
