Hey guys I've got a question for anyone who might be able to help. I just got my '82 F150 and put the motor back together from the water pump forward (after 3 diiferent water pumps lol). I took it for a short drive but long enough for the motor to get warmed up, wheb I cut it off and tried to start it back up it wouldnt start.
Then when I went out this morning it cranked right up. What problems could cause it to not crank when its hot? I know the timing being off is one. Any ideas?
When you say not starting...does that mean that it does crank but just won't start? You do say "Not Cranking" so I take that as it won't turn over?
That wouldn't have anything to do with timing if that's the case. Turning the motor over is fairly staight forward. You pull the starter solenoid in when you turn the ignition swithc (to start....this puts 12V to the starter and the engine should turn over.
If this is not happening...then one of 2 things:
1) you're not getting power to the starter (either you don't have good 12V from the starter, solenoid is not picking up or you have a bad connection somewhere)
2) you may have a starter problem it self. There has been problems with running headers and getting the starter hot and having issues with hot starts. Do you run headers? Or maybe starter is going bad
Start out by making sure all of your connections are good. Your batter is good. And the solenoid is picking up to put that 12V to the starter.
No I meant turning over but won't start up. I'm sorry for the confusion.
Well that can be several things:
Make sure your timing is set right and correctly
Make sure your choke is set properly assuming it's not a manual choke
Do you smell fuel? I had a problem with an old carb that it was dribbling fuel into the manifold after I shut it off and would flood it out. If I held the pedal to the floor it would crank and start up....or after it sat.
Keep it simple in your troubleshooting. The engine needs to have the right amount of fuel and needs to have a good strong spark...at the right time.
Might want to pull a couple plugs and see what they look like. Does it seem to run good when it does start?
