72 with a 97

Hey every one I have some questions. My father in law has a 1972 Frod F-100. He loves this truck but he is not very mechanically inclined. Now he also has a 1997 F-150. Now he has both trucks just sitting around not rally doing much of anything. But he wants the 72 to drive and be as reliable as the 97. So I made the suggestion why don't we just swap the 97's drive train into the 72.

How hard would this swap be? I am talking about taking the engine, transmission, rearend and everything else to make this work. I know the computer would have to go on the 72 for the 4.6 liter motor to run correctly and to make sure the transmission performs properly as well. But how hard would the swap be as far as mounts and space needed for this swap. The 72 is a long bed and the 97 is a short bed so there would have to be a drive line made. Has any one else done this or have any insight?

Thanks for your input.
Greg

I would think it would be easier to put the '72 body on the '97 frame. Of course you would also have to swap all the interior wiring and somehow configure the dash too. There is someone here on this forum that is doing something really similar. As I recall, he had to shorten his frame too.

Yeah I thought about that, but the 72 being a long bed and the 97 being a short bed, I figured that just swapping the drive train would be the best solution. I know it can be done but if there is some one out there who has done this swap I would love to hear and see your story.
