How can I tell the difference between a 429 and a 460? The casting numbers on the heads is C9VE-A and the casting numbers on the block behind the starter is D1VE-A2B. Can I positively ID what size of motor this is by these numbers or do I have to open the motor and measure the rods?
Measure the stroke. 429 should have a 3.59 inch stroke, 460 should have a 3.85 inch stroke. Take out a plug, turn the motor over by hand and stick a piece of wire down the plug hole. At the bottom of the stroke, mark the wire, and same at the top.

Yep, good info! Use copper wire, or wood dowling, be patient and measure. Basically anything that won't scratch or leave harmful deposits. Beats pullin the oil pan, and searching for numbers.
