i have a 93 ford explorer and need to buy a transmission automatic can anybody point me in the right direction thanks also having a problem with the push button 4 wd drive it wont engage thanks for any info
i also just got a 93 xlt.im having the same problem with the 4x4 buttons not engaging.what is it that you think is wrong with your tranny?is there anything its doing that you can tell me so that i can look for.im thinking that i need tranny work too but this is my first truck of anykind and im new to all this.
For the 4WD problem, make sure there is power to the shift motor on the transfer case. If ther is power there, then it's probably a dirty shift motor. http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html has instructions for cleaning the motor.
As for the transmission, if you're sure you need to get a replacement unit, be sure to get an A4LD that came behind a 4.0 L. The A4LD was in use for many years behind the 2.9 L of BII's and Rangers during the late '80's before being put behind the 4.0 L. You don't want one of the earlier models, because they won't hold up well behind the 4.0.
If you're not sure that you need a new tranny, get a good diagnosis. Some here are pretty good with this transmission. Maybe you can repair this one for less than replacing it.
